Eve didn't let herself look to the cause. She was sure it was Dominic's doing, judging by the huge figure standing in the corner of her eye.

Boldly. Eve pushed herself closer into Dimitri's solid frame, feeling the heat of him as she tucked herself into the crook of his arm. "Please don't let him ruin our night. We're supposed to be mingling and getting full of expensive hors d'oeuvres and then going home to…" she let the words trail off suggestively.

He winked at her. "So I can fuck you until your voice goes hoarse?"

Eve felt her skin heat as she nodded.

Dimitri didn't say anything, he just continued to look down at her. She didn't need to hear words to know what he wanted.Prove it to me, sweetheart.

She tugged at his hand and gave him a warm smile. "Give him to Dominic then."

Dimitri's lips twitched with the hint of a suppressed laugh. He nodded and held her lightly by the waist as they turned to leave.

"I told you we would have to kill at least one person tonight," she heard Dominic murmur and the muffled sounds of Landon's panicked voice.

Eve pretended she didn't hear that. Hopefully, he was joking.

Chapter 34

SomethingchangedinDimitriafter that night at the gala. A silence had fallen over him that Eve couldn't break.

For two days she tried to get him to talk to her but he dismissed every concern with a smile and told her there was nothing to worry about. But that couldn't be true. The gnawing feeling in her gut when he came home late each night or when he left before dawn with hardly a word told her something was wrong.

Eve tried hard to think back, combing over every hour and minute of the day when the odd silence took over him but she couldn't figure it out. Everything had been fine. Even after their run-in with Landon, Dimitri had taken her back to the ballroom hand in hand. He stayed by her side as she picked up a tiny plate from the buffet table, he introduced her to more important people, he even pulled her into a slow dance with the other couples and held her close. Eve had rested her head against his broad chest as he expertly guided her; she never felt happier in her life.

"Thank you for helping me save face back there." Seeing the confusion on his face she clarified. "You know, telling Landon I was your fiancé and all. I appreciate it."

Eve recalled the shadow that moved in his eyes before he blinked it away with a cool smile. Could that have been…

The sound of a door closing downstairs disrupted her thoughts. She had been sitting in the middle of the bed with her laptop going through her emails that morning. Hoping it was Dimitri, Eve rushed off the bed and raced through the open bedroom door and down the hallway to the staircase. Stopping at the top, she looked over the glass railing only to see Dominic come through the main foyer.

Her hope wilted.

Dominic scanned the living room before turning and looking up at her as if he had been searching for her. "Go pack an overnight bag," he ordered.

Eve stiffened. "What? Why?"

Dominic's naturally narrow eyes lowered even more, giving her a firm level look that told her not to argue with him.

Eve ignored it and crossed her arms, partly in defiance but mostly in nervousness. "What's going on? Why do I have to pack a bag?"

Each question stoked the flames of her imagination and she pictured Dimitri's firm but silent profile from the last two days. Was he finally through with her? Was this the moment she had been dreading?

"Eve," Dominic's voice rumbled in warning as he stopped at the bottom of the stairs and glared up at her. "I have instructions to get you packed and in the car in," he paused and looked at his watch before continuing. "In less than thirty minutes. You can either pack willingly or I can pack you and your things for you?"

The blood in her face drained away. Dominic paused midway up the stairs and tilted his head in slight confusion.

"All of my things?" she whispered.

Now at the top of the stairs, Dominic rested both hands on her shoulders. "No. Only an overnight bag," he reiterated slowly.

"But where—"

Dominic shook his head and turned her back to the bedroom. "No questions, just pack."

Half an hour later she was sitting in the back of the SUV, watching the city gradually dissolve into the desert landscape through her window as they raced down the highway. Besides some sort of soft jazz music playing through the car's speakers, the car was utterly silent. Dominic wouldn't tell her anything else as to where they were going or why.

The cold feeling in her gut was spreading through her limbs as she stared down at her bag sitting on the floorboard. Eve had tried calling Dimitri, but he didn't answer. Frustrated, she sat there and stared out the window, not seeing any of the scenery gliding past them.
