Tilting his head only slightly, just enough for her to catch the gleam in his glacial eyes, Dimitri silently commanded her forward. Eve shuddered. With a sigh, she walked over to him, bracing herself.
Dimitri offered her a wolfish smile as she approached. "Hello my sweet, how was your night with your friends?"
Stopping a few feet away from him, she returned a nervous smile. "It was fun," she said in an overly bright tone. "It was great getting to catch back up with them."
Dimitri nodded and opened his arms for her. Like a gravitational pull, she ignored her fear and closed the gap between them and fell into his arms. A pleased ripple of pleasure coursed through her as his strong arms encircled her, pushing her face into his firm chest. For a moment, she forgot all about her very legitimate concern of his reaction.
Dimitri, however, made sure to remind her as he leaned down and whispered in her ear. "Since you have no photos of me, let's rectify that now."
Eve could barely register the meaning of his words when she felt herself being turned to face his phone.
"Smile," Dimitri said as he crowded behind her for the picture.
The phone made a clicking sound, capturing a snapshot of their smiling faces. Eve was going to say how much she liked it but the feeling of teeth clamping down on her exposed shoulder elicited a little yelp instead. Again, the phone made the shutter sound as it snapped another photo.
Turning, Eve scowled at him as she held her shoulder where he bit her. Unapologetic, Dimitri held open the door to the SUV and gave her a challenging look.
"But what about my…" Her words trailed off as the passenger side door of the SUV opened and an enforcer stepped out. Walking to her parked car, he got into the driver's seat.
Never mind then.
Pulling up the velvet material of her midi dress, Eve slid into the backseat of the SUV. Inside, she noticed Dominic sitting in the driver's seat.
"I see that you're wearing my favorite dress," Dimitri said, his voice like honeyed wine.
Pulling her gaze from the lieutenant, she looked with uncertainty at the villainous man next to her. She couldn't quite judge his mood. Carefully, she replied. "It's practically my only dress."
"You have the means to rectify that. Or should I do it for you, like I did with the car? Though I've only undressed you, I wouldn’t mind dressing you," he offered.
Her cheeks heated at his words and she began to argue but he continued.
"You had no issues using the card yesterday for drinks and even a show. What was the name of that show again?" he asked, putting on a show remembering the name.
Now her whole face was on fire and she held up a hand before he could continue. "Yes, yes, I get it." She suddenly remembered something. What he said just before he took the picture. With narrowed eyes, she turned to him in the seat. Around them traffic whizzed by as Dominic drove. "Just how much were you spying on me last night? How did you know my friends asked for a picture?"
Dimitri turned slowly to look at her, a manic smile pulling slowly at the corner of his mouth. "Spying? Are you accusing me of spying when I received a call in the middle of a meeting yesterday from Petr telling me you ran off?"
"I didn't run-" she began to protest but he cut her off.
"And I had to take Andrey away from the audits to track you down after you left your phone in the car."
Guilt cut across her chest as she thought of Dimitri being interrupted during his important audit. Still, she tried to plead her case. "But I only left it in the parking lot of the-"
Dimitri went on, a coldness underlining his words telling her he was very serious beneath his smile. "I nearly killed Petr. Because from all the evidence, you ran off at the perfect time of my men's shift change at the house."
"I left a note!" she cried.Shift change?!What was he even talking about? That sounded like something out of a heist movie.
"You weren't supposed to leave a note, Eve, you were supposed to take your guard," Dimitri growled, and for the first time since getting in the car, she could see that he was actually quite angry.
"But it was a girls’ trip," she replied in a small voice.
Dimitri exhaled and stared up ahead as Dominic maneuvered through traffic.
She thought of the enforcer's lethal expression when he delivered her phone. "Petr isn't…he isn't in trouble, is he?"
"He is," his words clipped in malice.
Feeling a little like a scolded child when she did nothing wrong, Eve pushed back her long hair and folded her arms. "I don’t think that's fair. He did nothing wrong, nor me for that matter."
