The door to the lab opened and Ricky walked in escorted by Andrey.
As soon as Ricky's eyes locked in on his, the kid gave him a desperate look. "Where is my sister?"
Dominic turned his chair and watched as Ricky came to sit in the office chair next to him. He looked pitiful, with his swollen red eyes. Dominic thought of Eve. The kid reminded him of her and her startled expression when he opened the door to the bedroom. He had feared he would find her lying in bed still undressed or worse strapped to the cross in Dimitri'splay room, as he liked to call it.
Andrey sat down in the chair on the other side of Ricky and smirked even as he began typing. "She's alive," he replied.
Ricky paled. "What does that mean?"
Dominic gave Andrey a tired look full of meaning over the shorter guy's head, that said tostop fucking with him. Andrey shot him a piercing look back. Dominic smirked which only ignited something defiant in the other lieutenant's eyes. Honestly, Dominic really didn't like the other man that much but fucking with him was fun.
Andrey visibly tried to ignore him and looked back at Ricky with a cruel smile. "I mean, she's probably a little sore but it could have been a lot worse."
The kid looked like he was going to be sick.
Dominic noted the quick flash of remorse in Andrey's eyes just before he looked back at his computer screen. "Grow up," he growled. "I'm sure she enjoyed it. Dimitri isn't a complete asshole."
His words of encouragement were lost on the younger man as he stared off at nothing. Ricky began to shake his head, his pallor growing sickly looking. "They'll find out it was me," he whispered. "As soon as they notice their money is gone, they'll put two and two together. They'll go after her and my grandparents. They'll kill them."
Andrey rolled his eyes and leaned back in his chair and gave Ricky a long hard look. "The Armenians don't have the manpower or the money to do anything," he explained with a laugh, most likely thinking of how he and his guys drained the pathetic organization's bank account. "And besides," he gave Ricky a pitying look. "Your grandparents are being watched and while your sister was with Dimitri, I sent a couple of guys over to her place to add a few cameras."
Ricky looked at both men with confusion.
Dominic spoke up for the first time and both men looked at him. "Dimitri says he is through with your sister." He ignored the anger on Ricky's face and continued. "But he has ordered us to keep an eye on her."
Chapter 16
Thesoundofthecovers rustling softly blended with the fall of pattering rain against the window. With most of her room packed into boxes and stored in the empty living room, Eve had pushed her bed against the window a few nights ago. Now she was just lying there staring out at the neighborhood as the downpour turned the world gray. Beside her, Mochi purred in her ear, currently residing on her second pillow like it was a throne.
Eve had been like this for days now. Just lying here on her bed in this empty house with her thoughts in a state of constant flux. Although mostly it was the shame that kept her in bed like a weight tying her down. The shame was like a living breathing snake wrapping itself around her inch by inch, taking its time, allowing her to sink into its oppressive hold all the while killing her slowly.
What must people think of her? That giant man had escorted her to and from Dimitri. Had he been there in the penthouse that night when Dimitri forced himself on her? Would he even see it that way? Probably not. The dark shame burned in her chest and into her throat making her curl tighter into a ball under her covers as she thought of what that man must have heard. If he had been there, he would have heard only her cries of pleasure as Dimitri feasted on her on top of that table or maybe even the sounds she made as Dimitri took her over and over again that night.
Her shame-ridden thoughts tried to bring up Dimitri's beautifully evil face but Eve quieted those thoughts immediately. For a moment, she thought of him laughing about her, but the thought rang oddly false. Strangely, she just couldn't imagine it from the bastard. She could easily imagine him doing other terrible things but laughing at her was not one of them. But it was the thought of her brother that made her really sick. He knew what happened to her and that made the shame so much worse.
When she had gotten home that day, he called her that night.
"Eve?!" she had heard the desperate need in his voice and she knew he wanted to know if she was all right.
But she wouldn't let him say anything more. Anger and humiliation churned in her gut and heated her skin. She made sure he heard every drop of the disappointment she felt for him in her voice as she cut him off. "You know, if you would have just told me before you left that you were going to do something like this, I would have told you how fucking stupid it was. Now we all have to pay the price for your actions."
She hadn't let him answer and ended the call. Since then, he had texted her each day telling her how sorry he was, and explaining he was allowed to reach out to his family now, only under supervision.
Eve wasn't sure what that meant; she was too tired to care honestly. Occasionally, she replied with one-word answers before tossing away her phone. She could hardly think of her brother without wanting to crawl back into her bed. It killed her knowing he knew what Dimitri had done to her just as much as it angered her knowing he had caused all this with his idiotic decision.
At one point, she even considered going to the police station a few streets over. Eve imagined herself walking inside and requesting to speak to someone about this. Just maybe someone would believe her about the Ukrainian crime lord who ran the famous Elysium Hotel apparently for a Russian crime cartel. And if they got past that bit of confusion, maybe they would believe her that they were currently at war with some other criminal organization and she and her family were stuck in the middle of it. No doubt a detective would ask her what this Dimitri person did to her and she would have to respond by saying that he gave her an all-inclusive spa package, and new clothes, performed oral acts on her, and spent the remainder of the night bringing her to lots and lots of forced orgasms. Oh yeah, she could just see it.
Oh, okay…you said something about your grandparents being held hostage?
Oh yes, officer, they were given a suspiciously good deal on their crappy seventies house and were moved into a luxury assisted living facility for practically free. You gotta help me.
Eve turned over and groaned into her pillow. Just thinking it sounded ridiculous, much less trying to actually convince someone that this was all really happening to her.
The slight pressure of paws walking over her focused her thoughts back to the present. Looking up from her pillow, she watched Mochi walk over to the window and stare out transfixed. Eve leaned forward and followed her line of sight. Outside there was a familiar brown mail truck. They both watched as a man in an all-brown uniform and matching brown rain poncho hopped down from his truck and ran up to her porch. She heard the doorbell ring in the hallway and watched as the man ran back to his truck.
Slowly, and a little resentfully, she got up from her warm shame cocoon and padded barefoot into the living room. If it weren't raining, she would just leave the package, but she didn't want whatever it was to be ruined.
Retrieving the package and taking it into the kitchen she cut it open and pulled out a small, rectangular black box. Eve's heart stammered in her chest. She thought of the last black package she received containing the gold mask. Hesitantly, she opened the box. Her stomach dropped and she glared at the contents with rage. Inside were a pair of gold glasses that matched the ones that had been broken. Stuck to the inside top of the box was an elegantly scrawled note.
