Vic: Don't worry I miss you too. And I’ll be back over soon. I'm just taking care of a few things.
Even now as she slapped the dough furiously into the buttered pan, heat crept up her face at his blatant way of ignoring her defenses of anger and getting directly to her. Wincing, she remembered her reply back to him.
Me: Take care of a few things, huh? Sure. Hayden has told me all about your exploits and how the women of Holter pretty much lay at your feet. There’s no need to pull yourself from some girl's warm bed. I'll just make you a to-go plate.
Why? Just fucking why?! Dear Lord, she sounded like a jealous idiot. Sliding the pans of chocolate marble bread into the oven, Sapphire jabbed in the time on the timer a little too violently as she relived the mortification.
Vic's reply hadn't been as fast as the others and Sapphire could still remember the gut-twisting feeling as she waited for his reply.
Eventually, it came through. It was a picture followed by a text. The picture was of a dining table covered in papers and Vic's forearm resting on the table while he held a pen in hand.
Vic: No other woman. No bed. No real sleep even. Just me catching up on shit as fast as possible so I can come back to you and the guys. Memo to self, have a word with Hayden regarding past exploits.
Sapphire would not acknowledge the relief that cooled her worry like water to molten steel. She just wouldn't. She refused. Nope. She was not happy with the news at all.
"You okay in here?"
Looking up from her mixing bowl, Sapphire saw Finn's head sticking out above the swing doors, eyeing her and the kitchen suspiciously.
"I'm hearing an unusual amount of slamming and banging back here. Thought you were fighting a bear or something." Finn smirked.
Pointing her spoon at her, which was dripping with chocolate batter, Sapphire narrowed her gaze back at the handsome girl. "I'm fine," she answered tersely. "You just make sure to tell Mr. Walsh if he comes in that his wife's birthday cake will be ready by tomorrow morning."
Finn rolled her eyes and nodded. "Yeah, yeah."
Alone again, Sapphire stared down at the dark mixture.Pull your head out of the clouds!Vic is just Vic. The friend, the third Heathen and that's all. It didn't matter how her stomach knotted at the prospect of seeing him nor did it matter if her slutty mind conjured up forbidden dreams about the man at night.
"You have two hulking men already," she murmured to herself as she grabbed the muffin tin. "You sure as hell don't need a third."
Especially with the way both of her Heathens were acting. Scraping the last of the batter into the last muffin hole, Sapphire stopped and let out a tired sigh, and stared out at nothing in particular as she thought of both of them.
Since that day in the gym, Hayden had been expectantly clingy with her. Pulling her to him whenever he got the chance. Biting her neck, he would whisper demands in her ear that she tell him once more how much she loved him. And each and every time, Sapphire complied readily. She held his face in her hands and kissed him deeply each time, telling him over and over again that she loved him and could never stop loving him, until the flame of manic need cooled in his eyes.
It was Joel's new behavior that left her a bit puzzled as well as delightfully sore. Ever since that day, Joel's normally rough style of lovemaking had been taken to another level. There was something a little chaotic and desperate in his expression as he forced his length down her throat. Her desperate sounds and streaming tears only seemed to spur him on. For what felt like hours he toyed with her and tested her limits. Lately, his obsession seemed to focus on her ass. Just this morning he had inserted the tiny bulbous-shaped plug in her ass and made her wear it as he took her from behind. She could still feel the ghosting feeling of discomfort from it.
"Hey," Finn called out, poking her head back over the swing doors.
Sapphire looked up. "What's up?"
"I'm going to go take my lunch and take the trash to the dumpster."
Sapphire gave her a taunting smile. "You're really just going to talk to Rochelle down at the barbecue place, aren't you?"
Finn smiled a wicked little smile and said, "You goddamn know it."
Laughing, Sapphire rechecked her timers and pulled off her apron and hair net. Going to the front, she leaned on the counter and pulled out her phone. Reading a text from Joel saying that he and Hayden were working across the street at the gym, she glanced up to look out the window. Sure enough, two work trucks were parked outside the gym. Last night Hayden had mentioned that today they were working with a construction team to get the second and third floors back up to code from being a death trap.
The sound of the door jingling brought her attention back to the present. Sapphire blinked at the large man who walked through the door. Just for a second, she didn't know who the tall, good-looking guy was.
Correction, not a man, she thought with a smile, just an overgrown high school boy according to Joel.
"Oh, hi Garrett," she exclaimed, turning around and rushing to the kitchen. "I've got your order of extra special chocolate-pecan cookies right here," she called out.
He had come in a few days ago letting Finn know that the first batch of cookies went over well and he wanted one more, this time with pecans.
Coming back with the package, Sapphire proudly set it on the counter and looked at him for his reaction. He did not disappoint. His keen eyes lit up with satisfaction as he examined the clear box with the seafoam green and gold bow tied intricately on top.
"I thought since you were giving it to the girl you liked I would make it extra pretty," she said, unable to hide her satisfied smile at his obvious approval of her packaging.
