“I know about The Grid, that’s why I wanted to see you. I know about what you do.”

I stop in my tracks. “What did you just say?”

“I tried to explain it to Big Papa’s men, but they didn’t wanna hear it.” His voice lowers. “I know about all of it.”

“You better start spillin’, asshole, because you’re about ten seconds away from losin’ a limb.”

“I came here because I heard you were the guy to talk to, you and your brother.”

I shift on my feet, ready to reach in through the bars and smack his face against the metal. “So you thought you’d come around here instead of seeking me out personally?”

He shrugs. “Have you met you? I knew this would happen, so I was tryin’ to keep a low profile. Work out who I could trust before I made a move. They have no clue what happened at the station because the two goons following me didn’t see what I saw.”

“You’re not makin’ any sense,” I say. “And I’m tired of listenin’. Times up.”

“I know where two of The Grid’s scouts live, they were at the train station that day. I intercepted an abduction, you can watchthe security footage back, I’m sure you know how to get your hands on it.”

“First you have a daughter, now you saved the day?”

“I do have a daughter,” he says. “That wasn’t a lie.”

“The Grid. They’re here in the city?”

He gives me a condescending look. “Were they ever really gone?” He’s got a point, but that doesn’t mean I trust him. “Tell me what you know, and I’ll decide what happens next.”

“Sure you don’t wanna pull up a pew?” He nods behind me.

“Been sittin’ all day. Now tell me what you know about The Grid, and if you’re wastin’ my time, asshole, I’ll make sure you disappear for good.”

“Oh, Brew.” I jump, startled. “Sorry, I didn’t know anyone was still in the office.”

“Just gettin’ home,” he says. He’s tired. His face devoid of any emotion, but that’s normal for my boss. “What are you doin’ here so late?”

“I was actually just catching up on a bit of work since Olive is at Cami’s tonight.”

He frowns. Goddamn it. Normally Brew isn’t around when I’ve been at the office late. He’s usually at the clubhouse, or wherever it is he goes when he’s not here.

“Workin’ overtime?”

“It’s fine, just a little busier than usual. I had Nova helping me with the filing while you were gone,” I say. “She’s actually a nice young lady once you get to know her.”

His frown deepens. “A nice young lady? You sure we’re talkin’ about my cousin?”

I laugh. “Yes. I think she just likes to keep busy.”

“You mean out of trouble? Trust me, that one can get into trouble faster than you can blink. If you’re overworked, we need to hire some help.”

“I don’t like to ask for anything,” I say. “But business has picked up a lot these last few months.”

He runs a hand over his face, as if only just realizing it himself. “I should’ve noticed.”

“It’s fine.” I wave a hand at him. “I’m not unhappy here. Mondays and Fridays are the worst just because they’re typically busy days. I don’t know how you feel about Nova maybe filling in, she really helped me out.”
