As I put Blackie in the trailer, I thought about what PJ told me about that nigga Shaydon last weekend. I supposed us heading to the diner sparked the memory. He said they’d hugged when she first got there and talked a lil bit, and that was it. Hopefully, that was her putting him in his place and wishing his ass well, because the old Mythic wouldn’t mind making an appearance. When Maui had come back to Liberty, she said hedidn’t get out of pocket, but I wasn’t so sure. He seemed to have a slick ass mouth. For his sake, hopefully he kept his distance so we wouldn’t have any problems.

She did say that the family was asking about Treasure and how she was doing, but she was extremely shocked that Kingsley was checking on her. She said she didn’t talk to him much, because he was always busy, and their schedules clashed. He was at breakfast yesterday though. She said he seemed like he was bothered by what happened to her, more than him just being concerned about someone he barely knew.

He seemed cool. I didn’t really know him like that, but he was gon’ have to be anointed with the Holy Ghost to grab Treasure’s attention right now. She was still struggling. I could imagine so after all she’d been through. I was still having nightmares about it, and it didn’t happen to me. Hopefully, she could find peace again though. I knew it was truly going to be a battle getting back to that, but I also knew she was a fighter. She just had to somehow summon that side of herself again.

Making my way to Maui, I smiled. Damn, she was gorgeous, even in her baggy jeans and oversized T-shirt. Before I could get to her, Asad called out my name, grabbing my attention. When I made it to him and Ferris, he said, “This really looks good on you. I’m proud of you for fighting for your woman. I have to admit, I didn’t think it was gonna work, especially after the wedding.”

“I apologize for fucking up your wedding. I don’t think I ever apologized for that.”

“Don’t worry about it. At the pace y’all are going, you’ll be getting married soon. I’ll get my revenge then.”

He chuckled, and I did too. “Thanks, man. What’s up with your brother and Noni though?”

“Shiiiid, it ain’t nothing up with them. He ’bout ready to kill Bali though. She seems to think that he’s trying to control Noni. The problem is that he has an aggressive personality like they do. Someone had to concede, or they would stay into it. Noni chose to be the one, because she loves him and wants to be with him. I hope she’s doing that shit for the right reasons, and I hope Red is wanting to be with her for the right reasons as well. I get what Bali is saying. I don’t want her to lose herself to appease him, especially if she’s the only one making sacrifices.”

“Yeah. Bali and Carter are opposites, and that works. Maui and I are opposites too.”

“So are we,” Asad said. “Shani likes to fuck shit up at times. She don’t take no shit.”

“Lana is somewhat the same way. I like that shit though. I can’t wait to lock her ass down in December,” Ferris added.

“You have less than a month now, right?” I asked.

“Mm-hmm. Make sure y’all gag Uncle Storm. That nigga like to be disruptive at weddings.”

“That nigga disruptive, period,” Asad said with a chuckle. “Good luck, Mythic.”

I slowly shook my head. Mr. Storm wasn’t about to get on my fucking nerves. I’d avoid him just to make sure he didn’t or be around him with other people that could shut his ass down, like Mr. Jasper. After talking to them a little longer, I made my way back to Maui. She smiled when she saw me, and Caleb started to smile when he noticed me too.

He hadn’t cried much, but I knew that shit might be coming soon. It hadn’t been long enough yet. He would start to miss his mama before long. I could only hope the moment was mild when itdidhappen. I slid my arm around Maui and kissed her lips.

“You ready to go eat?” she asked.

“Mm-hmm,” I said as I licked my lips, then bit the bottom one.

Her entire face turned red, causing me to chuckle. “At the diner,” she enunciated, causing me to chuckle. “But maybe I should follow you home to take a nap too.”

I slid my hand to her neck and squeezed gently. “Maybe you should. Milana might be pissed though.”

She chuckled, but I could tell she was serious as hell. Our lovemaking was off the charts, always had been. That was what started this whole thing. “Yeah, I’ll never hear the end of it though,” she said and rolled her eyes. “Then she’ll kick me out the wedding.”

I smiled and grabbed her hand, leading her to my truck so we could go eat. Mythic Semien was a father and a soon-to-be fiancé. Who would have ever thought I was the typa nigga for that shit?

EPILOGUE

MAUI

TWO MONTHS LATER . . .

“Seven,be careful with that! You gon’ scratch the wall!”

He rolled his eyes, and I could have snatched them right out of the sockets and threw them in Uncle Kenny’s hog pin. We were moving into our house today, and everyone was helping out. I was so happy. We would be able to have Caleb’s first birthday party here next weekend. I hated that we weren’t here for Christmas, but we’d have plenty holidays to celebrate here in the future.

“Where do you want this, sis? It’s the last box.”

I smiled at Treasure and directed her to the kitchen with it. She’d come a long way in a short amount of time. I was extremely proud of her. Karima had been helping her through things as well. She could still be a little jumpy and didn’t like being alone, but she wasn’t nearly as clingy with Mythic as she was. I hoped she could handle him leaving her to move to Nome. She was still living with her parents. Every weekend, Mrs. Harper would take her to her house and stay overnight, trying to get her used to being there again.

Vanessa’s trial had come and gone, and I knew that probably offered her a little closure. Mythic was front and center, staring at Vanessa the entire time she was on the stand trying to defend her reasons for doing what she did. I could tell she was nervous as hell. I would have been too, if I would have had to stare into Mythic’s face that day. It was like his rage was dying to break free and have a field day with her ass. If he could have gotten away with it, he would have killed her ass while she was on the witness stand.
