I caught up with them on the stairs and followed them to Mr. Legend’s truck. “Mythic, I’ll get your truck detailed tomorrow,” Mr. Legend said.
Mythic only nodded and opened the door for me. I thought he was going to get in the back seat with me, but he got in the front instead. I took a deep breath and went to my knees on the floor of the truck and put product in his hair. When I startedbrushing it, he moaned. I closed my eyes for a moment, because I could hear his pain in even that. By the time I got it detangled and looking decent, we were arriving at the hospital. Mr. Legend gave Mythic some pills, and he swallowed them without water, then exited the truck.
I quickly wiped my hands with a wipe from my purse and was about to open my own door, because he’d kept walking, but he quickly turned around and helped me out. His mind was far away from here. After sliding out, I grabbed his shirt, causing him to turn to me. I pulled him to me and kissed his lips. “I love you, baby.”
“I love you too,” he whispered as he rested his forehead against mine for a moment.
Grabbing my hand, he led me inside. All the family was still seated in the waiting area. Mrs. Harper stood and made her way to Mr. Legend. She hugged him tightly.
“They had to get her cleaned up. She was practically covered in vomit, urine, and feces. They took samples, because they don’t believe all of it was hers. She threw up so much her esophagus is inflamed. She had a small stab wound in her side, but it didn’t puncture anything, thank God. Other than bruised bones and smaller cuts and scratches, she’s okay. Umm . . . they also found traces of semen in her mouth along with feces and had to do a rape kit.”
Mrs. Harper closed her eyes tightly, and Mr. Legend held her close as she cried. I found the tears falling down my cheeks as well. I looked up at Mythic to see he was staring into space. I could also see the rage he was probably feeling through his body language. He looked extremely tense. I slid my arms around him, and he glanced at me.
Once Mrs. Harper composed herself, she said, “They gave her something to relax her. They will also do a tox screen to see if shewas given any drugs. We will be able to see her in probably the next thirty minutes,” she said as she looked at the clock.
I grabbed Mythic’s hand and led him to a chair for him to sit. As I prepared to just stand next to him, he pulled me to his lap and held me close. I wrapped my arm around his neck and allowed him to rest his head on my chest. I kissed his forehead and silently prayed that he would be able to get through this.
“How’s Mythic doing?” Ashanni asked.
I looked away from my computer as Nesha entered our workspace. It seemed everyone was concerned about him. That was a far cry from their attitudes about him from a few months ago. Aunt Chas, Malia, and even Jakari were all tuned in to see what I would say. Treasure was supposed to go home today. She’d been there for five or six days.
“He’s still having a rough time. I think whenever he can have a heart to heart with Treasure, it may get better. She still isn’t really talking. The trauma of everything really did a number on her. I can only imagine the torment she endured. He’s been nearly as quiet as her. He sits with her all day.”
Tears sprang from nowhere, and I quickly wiped them. I hated to see him this way . . . her too. It was taking a toll on everyone. I had been staying at his parents’ house with him, trying to get him in better spirits, but I knew until Treasure would say something, he would be stuck in this rut. Ashanni put her arms around me as Aunt Chas kissed my cheek.
Treasure had a long road to healing. She’d been on heavy antibiotics and pain medications. She had a lot of bruising, but no broken bones. They were beating the shit out of her the two days they had her. The hospital had called the police, and theyran DNA on the samples they got. Most of the perps were in the system, so their DNAs popped immediately.
There were five different strands. There was only one who they couldn’t find, probably because they didn’t have a record. When they went to execute arrest warrants, three were already deceased. Two of the bodies were found at the shack where Treasure was, and the other was found in a parking lot near the others. The guy they arrested dropped names of others involved. Three happened to be police officers.
They’d tortured her simply because they couldn’t get Mythic. I knew that was what was bothering him the most. They did all this to her simply to get back at him. I also wanted to believe they put her in that shack because they knew Mythic would find her there. They wanted him to be the one to find her.
She had several STDs, which were all curable.Thank God.She had digested feces, which I was sure they’d shoved in her mouth.Nasty muthafuckas.Every time I thought about everything she’d gone through, I would cry my eyes out. Not only was I hurting for her, but I was realizing that it could have been me had my family not been proactive by having Watchful Eyes look after us.
When Shani released me from her grasp, Nesha said, “I’m going to be praying for her. You think maybe Karima could get her to speak?”
“It’s possible. Karima has the gift of the Holy Spirit, that’s for sure. Plus, they’re friends.”
“Yeah. Well, in other news, they are pouring your slab, girl.”
My eyebrows lifted. “Already?”
“Yeah. What’chu mean already? We don’t fuck around.”
I giggled and slowly shook my head. “I swear, you been around those niggas too much. You starting to talk like them.”
She laughed. “Hell yeah. They’ve rubbed off on me. Well, I gotta go to Beaumont to the courthouse. I’ll talk to y’all later.”
“Okay, Nesha. Thanks.”
When she left, Ashanni came and sat next to me again. “I know you’ve been seeing to Mythic, so I know you haven’t heard.”
I frowned. “What?”
“The twins are into it again. Bali said that Noni isn’t sacrificing, she’s changing who she is because of Red Squared. Girl, they making me tired as fuck. I told Asad to talk to his brother. I kind of agree with Bali. If she ain’t who he wants her to be, why he fucking with her? It makes me think he only wants her because Carter is with Bali. He needs to accept her for the way she is. If she knows something she does bothers him, she’ll change it on her own, not because he demands it.”
“Damn. I hate that. I have an appointment with Noni for her to go over my lab work tomorrow. Maybe we can get to the bottom of things. It’s so much going on. I’m tired, Shani.”
“I know you are, boo. They know too. That’s why they been bothering the fuck out of me and Milana. Bali loves being in control and bullying people to make them do what she wants them to do. I thought Noni was the same way, but as I think back, most times it was Bali initiating shit and her going along with it. She still mean as hell, but I don’t think she’s as bossy as Bali. I don’t know. The whole situation is on my nerves. Bali needs to just let her do what she thinks is best. They should have learned that shit after you and Mythic.”
