I ended the call and began going over documents that were in the tray. We logged invoices before paying them so they would be more organized. I didn’t know why these companies didn’t do everything electronically. We didn’t deal with huge companies for supplies. Uncle WJ wanted to patronize smaller black-owned companies, when possible. I loved him for that. He always made sure to look out for our people.

As I logged them, the door opened, and my daddy walked through. He had a big smile on his face. I stood from my desk and went to him, hugging him tightly. “Hey, Daddy Mayor.”

“Hey, baby,” he said as Uncle Marcus walked in too.

“What are y’all doing here?” I asked as Uncle Marcus and now Ace approached us.

“What’s up, niece?” Uncle Marcus said.

I hugged him and Ace, then looked back at my daddy. He grabbed my hand and took me to a private area of the office. Once he closed the door, he said, “I can’t get Seven to drop it. He is convinced that Mythic told those people to rob him.”

I frowned. “He did what?”

His eyebrows lifted, then he nodded repeatedly. “I suppose that proves Seven is right. Yesterday, Seven confronted Mythic about sending those people to rob him. That was when he killed that guy. Mythic denied it, saying he didn’t target him specifically. The fact that he didn’t tell you tells me that he’s lying. Did he tell you about Iesha?”

“The woman he’s talking to? Yes.”

He nodded again. “More proof that he actually targeted Seven. That’s why your brother is so hung up on getting at him. He won’t tell me who, but somebody told him that Mythic targeted him.”

All the wind seemed to leave my sail. “I need a minute, Daddy.”

“Okay, baby.”

I walked out of the room and ran right into Shaydon. He grabbed me around my waist. “You okay?”

A frown appeared on his face as he stared at me. I only nodded and hurriedly went to the bathroom. I threw up for what felt like forever. My heart was so heavy. Mythic could have gotten my brother killed or locked up for the rest of his life. Why did he target Seven? I needed to hug my brother. Closing myeyes, I realized I needed to come back home. That was probably why Mythic stayed out all night. He knew I would find out. I felt so sick and weak.

I was so glad I hadn’t confessed my love for him to him yet. There was no way I could be with him after this. Although that was almost a couple of years ago, it still happened. I knew there was more to the reason Seven was behaving the way he was. While he could be a whole ass at times, he never usually kept it going for this long. When I exited the bathroom, my daddy and Shaydon were both standing there. I gave them a tight smile and started walking back toward my desk.

My daddy slid his arm around me, stopping me. When he pulled me to him, I cried so hard. It almost felt like I was going to throw up all over again. I pulled myself together and took deep breaths. Backing away from him, I could see the rage in his eyes. He had tried to get along with Mythic, but this shit changed everything. I tried to walk away again, but Shaydon grabbed my hand.

“You wanna go for a ride, Maui?”

I shook my head. I was feeling way too vulnerable to be around his ass. “I have to finish my day. Thank you though.”

I went to my desk and snatched my cell phone from my desk and called Mythic. I was so angry. I had never been this angry. Of course, he didn’t answer. I hadn’t talked to him since he left last night. My daddy appeared next to me, so I looked up at him. “Can I move back home?”

He frowned. “That goes without saying, baby girl. For the record, I understand why you stayed with him. He treated you well, baby. Ali’s reports were mind boggling to me. I see what you saw in him. Ali also peeped someone else watching him. So I’m glad he was taking precautions and keeping you safe.”

I nodded and went back to what I was doing. Before I could get too wrapped up in work, I asked, “Can you follow me to Liberty when I get off? You and Uncle Marcus?”

“Hell yeah,” Uncle Marcus said as he walked to my desk. “We all gon’ help you. I already called Jasper, Kenny, and WJ. You gon’ have a whole crew wit’chu. I could hear Jacob, Rylan, and Jakari in the background when I called WJ. Don’t be surprised if they come too.”

I nodded. At this point, I didn’t care who came along and whether it looked excessive or not. Apparently, they all knew what Mythic had done. This shit hurt. I had gone against everyone for him. The fact that he knew he’d done that to my brother and still pursued me only made me angrier. He should have left me the fuck alone. Now, I was pregnant with his baby. I was such a fucking fool. Before I realized it, I was slinging shit as I inputted it in the spreadsheet.

My daddy pulled me from my seat and cradled me in his arms like a baby, kissing my head repeatedly. “It’s gon’ be okay, baby.”

“No, it’s not! I will never forgive myself for being so stupid! I’m pregnant with his baby!”

I was literally crashing out, beating my daddy’s chest. He let me have my moment as everyone crowded around us. I wiped my face, now feeling embarrassed. My eyes met Shaydon’s, and his eyes held so much promise. His words had come into fruition extremely quickly. I was in pieces, but the last thing I was thinking about was letting him help put me back together.

My daddy set me on my feet just as Seven walked through the door. I just stared at him as my lips turned up, and the tears started all over again. “Seveeeen. I’m so sorryyy.”

He quickly came to me and pulled me in his arms. He kissed my head. “You don’t owe me an apology. You didn’t know. Quit all that crying.”

I pushed him playfully and wiped my face as he stared at me. After taking a deep breath, I said, “I’m okay. I need to get back to work.”

Just as I was about to sit down, it seemed every man in the Henderson family came through the door.Fuck.
