“You’re welcome, sweetheart.”
When she walked away, I turned back to the table to find Asad and Ferris staring at me with frowns on their faces. “What?”
“Don’t be tryna come in here and steal Aunt Chrissy, nigga. She ain’t even speak to us from catering to your ass.”
“Don’t be haters. Real recognize real.”
Maui, Ashanni, and Milana laughed. “All I know is we gotta have fun together now. Y’all can chill at my house since y’all’s houses aren’t built yet.”
“Hell yeah,” I said.
It felt good to be a part of something positive. It wasn’t that I didn’t have access to positivity before, but this felt different. I could enjoy being around a group of people that I could call friends, who would eventually become family. There was only one loose end to tie up, and I could only hope Watchful Eyes was as good as everyone said they were. Once that was taken care of, I could fully let my guard down. I hadn’t laughed in a long time.
I glanced around to see which direction Epic went. I didn’t see that nigga. Standing from my seat, I looked outside and didn’t see his truck. When I sat, I noticed everyone was watching. Choosing not to say anything immediately, I grabbed my phone and called Epic. The phone rang then went to voicemail. “Fuck!” I whisper shouted.
“Baby, what’s wrong?”
“Did any of y’all see where Epic went?”
Maui frowned and looked around. “I was so excited to see you I looked right over Epic. Is his truck outside?”
“No. I stood and didn’t see Ali anywhere either.”
When Ashanni’s dad walked in slightly panicking, his eyes met mine. He quickly made his way to me. “You need to get home, man. I’ll take you.”
“What the fuck happened? Mister Jasper, tell me.”
“Can I wait to tell you when we get in the truck?”
“Naw, fuck, naw. Fuck! Just tell me!”
“Treasure . . .”
He couldn’t even get the rest out before I burst through the door of diner. I didn’t know where I was going or what was even happening. Something had happened to Treasure. I was gonna fuck the streets of Liberty all the way up. If she was dead, I would stop at nothing to make sure all those muthafuckas paid for it. All this shit was my fault.Fuck!
I didn’t even think to put anybody on her, because I didn’t think she was on their radar. Treasure and I never went anywhere together. We only saw each other at Mama and Dad’s house.
“Mythic! Wait!”
I squatted to the ground, trying to contain my anger. When Maui caught up with me, I was nearly to the street they lived on, a couple of blocks away. She squatted in front of me, and asked, “What happened? Where are you going?”
“I don’t fucking know. I just know something happened to Treasure. I feel like I’m ’bout to lose it, baby.”
Mr. Jasper drove up next to us, and said, “Get in.”
We did as he said, both getting in the back seat. He took off for Liberty and said, “Jericho is on it, looking for her. Somebodysnatched her up. Witnesses told Legend that much. No one wants to say names though.”
“Who were the witnesses?” I asked in a low steady voice. “And why the fuck Epic left without me?”
“He said he and Ali made eye contact, and when Ali took off, he took off behind him. He called me and asked me to come get you. He said he wanted you to enjoy a little bit of happiness before snatching you back into this bullshit. There was nothing you could do at the moment, man. We gon’ get to the bottom of it. Just pray they cooperate and don’t hurt her. Treasure is a sweet young woman, but I know she a lil feisty too. Pray she does what she needs to do to make it out alive.”
My lip was twitching so bad, like I was snarling. This life didn’t want to let me go. Had I not saved Seven’s punk ass, my sister would still be in a kitchen somewhere, making sweets. My mind was about to slide straight to hell and make me wish I would have never tried to be right, but when Maui slid her arm behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist, I remembered why I wanted to be right. This shit wasn’t totally on me, but I couldn’t stop the guilt from fucking with me.
“I love you, Mythic. Always. No matter what happens, you’ll always be my one. Nobody else. I know you feel the same about me.”
I glanced down at her. She was giving me permission to wild the fuck out. Mr. Jasper was staring at me in the rearview mirror as he drove. I gave my attention back to Maui and kissed her lips. “I love you too, baby. Always. Ain’t no fucking doubt about that.”
When I smelled the loud, I looked up to see Mr. Jasper taking a pull. After he did so, he passed it back to me. I almost snatched that shit from him and took a long ass pull from that shit. If I didn’t calm down, I was going to die today. I was no longer living for just myself. Maui needed me. I had to do my best to make sure I remembered that. Without her, I was a nothing ass nigga, and without me, she wouldn’t make it in a life that was laid out at her feet. She had everything anyone could want, but none of that shit mattered to her without me.
