I should be happy, but I feel anything but.
My throat feels like it's going to close up and everything around me feels like it's becoming smaller, making it hard for me to breathe.
I see Ace and Aria walk forward. Ace has a straight face with his hands in his pockets and then Aria just has a bright smile on her face that almost makes me want to smile.
"Surprise," Thalia says from behind me and I turn around to look at her.
"Why didn'tyou tell me?"
"Because it was supposed to be a surprise." Thalia wraps her arms around me. "Happy Birthday, beautiful!"
When she unwraps her arms from around me, I feel another pair of arms wrap around me. "Happy Birthday, Jane," Aria whispers in my ear. I turn my body around and wrap my arms around her. "I'm sorry if this all makes you feel a little overwhelmed." I shake my head as if saying 'it's fine'. Aria lets go of me and she places her hands on my shoulders. "How about you go upstairs and wash up before we start handing out food?" She smiles at me and puts her hand on my chin.
I smile back and nod my head.
Aria kisses my forehead and lets go of me so that I can run upstairs to my room.
Once I am inside my room, I close the door and then walk in front of my mirror. Right now, I am wearing black leggings and a dark blue crewneck. Not good enough for a family party. People are probably going to say I look depressed if I go down wearing this.
I know my parents aren't here because my mom is on bed rest since she is sick and my dad is just mainly taking care of her and then some other work that my uncle Alex gave him.
I go to my closet, and I find a long cotton slip dress that is grey. I put it on and then go to stand in front of the mirror again. It looks good on me and it's comfortable, so I'll probably wear this. I leave my hair alone since I styled it this morning and it looks fine the way it is right now.
As I stare at myself in the mirror, I imagine someone from downstairs saying ‘happy birthday’ to me.
I smile at myself in the mirror. "T-Thank you," I say quietly. I take a deep breath. "T-Thank you."
Stop fucking stuttering.
I open my mouth to try again but I hear a knock on my door making me close my mouth and look at who walks in.
The tingles in my stomach make me blush as I watch Rowan walk in. He is wearing a black dress shirt and black pants.
Can't forget about his combat boots. Even if he is wearing a nice suit, he will probably always wear those stupid, ugly, dirty, combat boots.
"Hey," he says as he closes my bedroom door. I smile and then look back at myself in the mirror. "What's wrong?"
"Did you know about this party?" I ask him as he stands behind me.
"Yes," he says, making me look at him through the mirror.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I ask and when he doesn't answer I turn around and look up at him.
"I should have told you."
"Damn right," I say in a harsh tone. "I didn't want a party. I don't like parties."
"Your parents wanted you to have one. I tried to tell them you wouldn't want one, but they didn't listen."
"You should have still told me though," I argue. "Now that you didn't tell me I have to go downstairs and actually pretend I'm enjoying the company when in reality I would have been fine by myself."
I really don't want to go down there.
"I know. I'm sorry I didn't tell you," Rowan apologized. "But as I said, this was your parent's idea, not mine. Don't get mad at me for following my boss's orders."
"So that's what all of this is then? That's the only reason why you are here, right? Following the boss's orders."
"Will you stop-"
