"You, okay?" he asks, which makes me nod. "Well Katlyn wants to start having the kids work on their stories. I could tell her that I’ll handle it and you could go home?"
I shake my head, ‘no’ and then stand up."I’m fine. Trust me."
Sixteen
Rowan
As I pullup to Jane's school my phone rings. Once I've parked the car I look down and see the name 'Cole Reyes' pop up on my phone.
My whole body tenses as I see his name.
I pick up the phone and press the answer button.
"Rowan?" Cole asks as the phone starts connecting to the car.
"Yes?"
"I wanted to talk to you about Jane's birthday. It's coming up and unfortunately, we won't be there to celebrate so Layna and I want to do something special for her."
Jane's birthday is in a few days. She told me when she called me the other day and our conversation somehow shifted to her birthday and how she hates it because her parents always try to make her celebrate or do something.
"Okay. What do you have planned?"
"We want to have a small surprise party for her at the house."
I furrow my eyebrows at the stupid idea Cole has for his daughter. "I don't think Jane would like that," I state.
"Why?"
"Because she isn't friends with a lot of people so not a lot of people would even show up, only family friends and then some friends who are a part of the different groups that the Americans and Italians are allies with."
"You're wrong. Jane has some friends. I think she will have fun. Plus, this will be a good way for her to interact with more people and get out into the world again."
"I don't know. Jane wouldn't like it. Especially if she doesn't know about it either."
"Well, last time I checked I am the boss, aren't I?" Cole questions in a serious voice which made me clench my fists. "Rowan?"
"Of course, sir," I grit my teeth together so I don't say something I'll regret.
Cole really doesn't seem to know his daughter.
How the hell does he think that having a surprise party for Jane is a good idea?
I agree, she should start coming back to be social with the world again, but I know for a fact that having a party will scare her. She doesn't want that.
"Good. I will be texting you today for the specifics," Cole says before hanging up.
Fucking dick.
He thinks he knows Jane so well, but he really doesn't. To be honest I think he and Layna think they know what Jane needs and wants but in reality, they don't.
I wish they could see Jane the way I see her. Peopleneedto see Jane the way I see her.
The sound of laughing makes me look out the window. I see Jane and herfriend, Callan, walking and laughing.
Jane is smiling at him while holding her notebook to her chest.
My jaw clenches as I watch them.
