“Works for me.”
She pointed out the boxes for storage, then stood back and let them do their thing. They were quick, efficient, and didn’t ply her with questions or offer unsolicited advice.
In less than an hour, everything had been loaded into a box truck, taken to the temporary storage unit she’d rented, and unloaded. They’d even filled her SUV for her and were quite appreciative of the big tip she gave them. She refused to call it hush money.
After they left, Corinne made one more pass around the apartment. The place looked so empty, just like it had when she moved in. Nothing to showthat she’d even lived there. And didn’t that sum up the last ten years of her life? Minus a few minor changes, she was right where she’d been a decade ago.
She was about to leave when her phone signaled an incoming text from Brett.
Is the rumor true?
Depends on which rumor
You like hiking?
Ah. Clearly, Lacie had thought a nudge was needed to move things along. Part of that was Corinne’s fault. She hadn’t properly conveyed that while she found Brett’s company pleasant, their relationship would go no further than occasional companionship. Especially now that she’d experienced what it was like to be with someone shereallycared about.
She believed Brett felt the same way. There was no spark there, for either of them.
Yes, it’s true. Why?
It’s a beautiful day. Want to hit some trails with me?
When?
Now?
She laughed. Since Patrick and his friends had done most of the heavy lifting, she wasn’t too worn out. Spending the day on the trails sounded better than unpacking and then eating takeout alone in front of the television or going down the social media rabbit hole.
Can you give me an hour?
The day is young. I’ll give you two if you want. Want me to pick you up? You’re on Maple Drive, right?
Not anymore, and one hour is fine. Do you know where Spruce Lane is?
No, but I’m sure my GPS does
Number 1402. See you in about an hour
See you soon
Corinne put her phone into her pocket and locked up for the last time.
She was haulingthe last box into her new accommodations when Brett pulled up.
He immediately took the box from her with a, “Here, let me help.”
He carried it into the house and set it next to the pile of things she’d already brought in. “Lacie said you were moving, but I didn’t think it was until next week.”
“I decided to move early.”
“And you didn’t tell her.”
“I knew she’d want to help.”
He laughed softly. “Got it. And it’s really none of my business.”
“No, it’s fine. I love my sister, and she means well.”
