Corinne looked up to see her sister in the doorway. It took a moment for her eyes to focus. She’dbeen staring at her screen for so long. “Hey, Lace. What’s up?”
“I thought I’d treat my favorite sister to lunch.”
Corinne glanced at the clock, surprised to see that several hours had gone by. Becci had well and truly made a mess of the Kellermans’ investment accounts. It was no wonder they were pissed.
“I’m really swamped today.”
“When aren’t you swamped? Besides, you look like you could use a break. Come on. I’m buying.”
Corinne exhaled. She should grab something to eat. With nothing to temper the industrial-strength coffee she’d had earlier, her stomach had settled into an uncomfortable, constant burn. Plus, she was probably going to be working late into the night.
“All right.”
They went to the same café she’d been to with Brett. It seemed like a lifetime ago.
“Isn’t this where you and Brett had lunch?” Lacie asked once they were seated.
“Uh-huh.”
“I heard you went to the movies too.”
“We did.”
“And?”
“And what?”
“And,” Lacie said, drawing the word out, “how did it go?”
“It went fine. He’s nice.”
“Right?” Lacie said, all but bouncing in her seat. “I knew you two would hit it off.”
“Calm down,” Corinne said. “We went out twice.”
“When are you going to see him again?”
“I don’t know. Things are a little hectic right now.”
Some of Lacie’s excitement dimmed. “Right. How is the apartment hunt going? Did you find a place yet?”
“Not yet.”
“What about The Towers? They’re supposed to be really nice.”
They were. They were also extremely expensive and required a minimum one-year lease. Not the kind of place she could comfortably afford if she made hertake this job and shove itfantasy a reality.
“Or the new place along the ridge. What’s it called? The Woodlands?”
“Those are condos, not apartments.”
“Yeah, but like Dad says, it’s building equity, right? And it’s a gated community, so you’d have extra security.”
If the idea of a one-year lease made her tetchy, a thirty-year mortgage gave her hives.
“I’m not ready for that kind of commitment.”
Lacie was silent for several long moments. “Come stay with us,” she said finally. “Then, you can take all the time you need to find something that works for you. You know we’d love to have you.”
