“I’m pretty sure I’m in love.”

My heart stopped for a second before thundering on. He was… what? He told me he loved me in an animal shelter filled with barking dogs? Besides, it was way too early to speak about love, wasn’t it? Nonetheless, my heart was fully on board with the idea, pumping my blood through my body in record speed, making me hot all over.

“Sammy’s so adorable.”

Thedog.

I swallowed, disappointment hitting me square in the chest.

Fuck.

“Yeah, he is,” I croaked.

Luke cocked his head. He climbed back to his feet with a groan, stretching and turning his leg with a pinched expression. Then he faced me, cupping my chin with one hand.

“When I tell you I’m in love with you, it won’t be in a kennel. Even I am more romantic than that.”

“You’re plenty romantic,” I whispered, wiggling my toes in my new shoes. “At least you’re just the right amount of romantic for me.”

Luke grinned, placing a short kiss on my lips. “I still won’t tell you I love you in here.”

“Then we should probably get out of here.”

Luke snorted.

That wasn’t a no, right?

Chapter 15

Luke

Getting a young dog meant turning your life into chaos — and I fucking loved it.

I loved having Sammy follow me around everywhere I went — well, actually I could go without him following me to the toilet, but alas, what could you do? I loved having to go out on walks and seeing my surroundings that were still astounding to me even after a couple of months of living here through the eyes of my excited puppy, learning to see it from a whole new angle. We’d spent ten minutes next to a tree stump, Sammy sniffing at it, jumping over it, and having fun while I looked at the moss on the side, the small little tree growing out of the rotting wood, the mushrooms that’d made the stump their home. It was fascinating and oddly relaxing.

But what I loved the most were the evenings I spent with Zayne. I still hadn’t brought him over to my house, so he’d had to make his puppy safe rather quickly — and he’d done so with great joy. Sammy had several knitted style dog beds in warm colors in various rooms of the house. And toys? Lord, every time I went over to Zayne’s, there was something else for Sammy.

I smiled at the prospect of seeing him soon.

I’d just locked up the shop and was on my way to grab dinner from Addy’s real quick before heading over for a quiet evening, which we both needed.

Zayne’s shop had gone through the roof in terms of sales, and we couldn’t keep up with the demand. I was working in the shop on my own full time now, dividing my time between the actual shop and dealing with the online orders, while Zayne worked his ass off in his shed to make more soap because we were almost sold out — of everything.

Also, there was the issue of the grand opening which required us to have even more product than normal. My heart started pounding just thinking about that. One more week. One more week until the grand opening. One more week until we could check off at least one point of our ever-growing to-do list.

“Are you excited to go to Zayne’s house?” I asked Sammy, who was obediently walking next to me — aside from the fact he’d bitten into his leash, basically walking himself around, smiling happily. I still held the end in hand, but it was too cute to see how he thought he held all the reign in hand.

Of course, he didn’t answer me, but he would if he could.

Zayne was good. No, the best.

For both of us.

Which was exactly why I was getting all his favorite foods as takeout.
