Thankfully, I made it to the toilet this time, but since I hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast, I mostly retched stomach acid and bile. The whole episode left me feeling shaky and weak, so I curled up on the bathmat and fell back asleep.

“Finn! What the hell are you doing on the bathroom floor?”

I squinted, my face scrunching up in a frown against the blazing overhead light my mother had switched on. My head was still pounding, and I felt hot all over.

“I threw up again and I guess I fell asleep,” I responded feebly.

“Get up off the floor and get back in bed. Honestly, I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t have just gotten back in bed after you got sick.”

She turned and walked from the room without bothering to help me up. I managed to pull myself to a standing position but took a moment to brush my teeth and pop a couple of Tylenol before moving to the hall, where she stood waiting with her arms crossed, her forehead creased in impatience.

“Can you move a little faster, please? Your father and I should have left five minutes ago.”

I gave her a cursory glance, noting her attire. Dressed in a long satin skirt, paired with a deep-red cashmere sweater, and wearing heavy makeup, it was clear she was heading to a holiday event.

I didn’t bother to acknowledge her as I passed by, climbed back into my bed, pulled the covers up, and closed my eyes.

“Your father and I are heading out to the symphony. Now, he is working a very important deal with one of his clients, so there’s a possibility we will be coming back for a nightcap after the performance. I was hoping you’d be up for a little piano performance, but I suppose, under the circumstances, we’ll pass on that.”

“Heaven forbid your sick child mess with your plans, Mother.”

I didn’t bother to open my eyes to gauge her reaction, but I could imagine the flat line of her mouth as she glared in disapproval. “Your smart mouth really isn’t appreciated, Finneas. Just make sure you stay in your room. We don’t need you vomiting all over our guests.”

Without waiting for a response, she walked out my door.

I lay there for a while, but despite my exhaustion, I was achy all over and couldn’t get comfortable enough to fall asleep. I found my phone next to my bed and picked it up to message Carmen.

I feel like death

Sorry sweets. I heard what happened

I’m sure everyone did

No worries. In seventh period, Shelly Smithfield and Jenny Lawrence got busted for vaping in the second-floor bathroom and were suspended for 3 days. Code of conduct calls for expulsion, but word is their daddies made a huge donation and got it down to a suspension. It’s bullshit, of course, but at least that bit of gossip took the heat off you

Lucky me

CiCi

Lol

Seriously, tho. You gonna be ok?

Yeah. My parents are pieces of shit, but I’ll live

CiCi

??

I sighed.

Don’t worry about it. Just the usual shit. Having a son is such a huge inconvenience for them
