My partner was right that I needed to be careful around them, but what he’d also just convinced me of was that the club needed to be taken down, ended, closed down, locked up, whatever it took. Because groups of people who brutalised anyone, womenor otherwise, shouldn’t be allowed to ‘get away with it’, no matter who they threatened.

Maybe I was the right one to do this, because unlike Alex, I had nobody out there to care if I disappeared in the process of destroying them. I wouldn’t leave brokenhearted loved ones behind. I’d just be gone.

Chapter Twenty

It was a bitof a mess, really, because she thought I’d stood her up, when that was the last fucking thing on my mind, and yet, was I here that night? Thanks to the fucking Don, I missed her, and now she was convinced I was some asshole who made dates with women, and just fucking didn’t show up.

And the bigger issue, I mean bigger than my fucking blue balls, was the fact that if she was more pissed at me, she was more likely to try and screw with me, and the club, and that’d get her killed.

How the hell could I warn her off, without making her even more curious about me, or my connections? Would she have already tried looking into me? My fingerprints matched my fake name, and that fake name had a whole fake back story that led as far from Don Rossi as possible. That said, I knew she was tenacious, and desperate to find something untoward, probably for career development, but she didn’t realise just how dangerous it would be for her to even try.

I grabbed my burner phone, locked myself in my room, and dialled the one person I could talk to about this.

“You again? I think you’re developing feelings, man. I’m taken.”

I grinned, flipping the phone off, even though Ice couldn’t see me. His sense of humour was borderline abusive, and isn’t that the best kind?

“I’ve got my dick in my hand… does that scare you?”

He made a choked sound and cursed me.

“I nearly drowned in my coffee, you fucker.”

I leaned back and relaxed for a minute, because something about Ice just chilled me out, and maybe that was what I really needed right now.

“So you’re saying that was too early to choke you? I’m all about edging, man.”

Something rustled on the other end of the phone, and Ice sighed heavily.

“Well, now I’ve wiped up all the coffee I spat everywhere, I’m guessing you didn’t call just to hit on me. What’s up?”

What’s up indeed. How the fuck to even say this… being real wasn’t really my thing, was it?

“Grease? Is something going on there? Nothing’s coming up on my sweeps?”

“Jesus, I’m just trying to work out how to fucking say this, can you shut it?” I ignored his laugh, and cleared my throat. Just fucking do it, dipshit.

“Say you were me, and someone was getting too close-”

“If I were you, I’d probably hit on someone else,” he said glibly, but I knew he was absorbing my words, so I gave him a moment, and that’s when he groaned, and I knew exactly what he’d figured out.

“Her?”

Fuck. He really was fast.

“Maybe. So just say she’s getting too close, and certain people are concerned about the threat she might pose…”

“Fuck. Big D?” See, talking about this shit on phones was hard work, with all the fucking chicanery we needed to do to hide our meanings and stuff.

“Yeah. Say she’s on her last chance, and that got blown when I got uh… tied up in a situation again…”

Ice groaned. “You mean you crossed the line again, or you fucked her again?”

Ha. “Which could also be called crossing a line,” I admitted, already pretty sure I knew what he’d say.

“Fuck, man, you don’t do things by halves. Is she aware there’s a threat?”

“What the fuck could I actually tell her though? I tried backing off and not triggering her temper again, but I kinda fell on her.”
