When it comes down to it, I know I could live in a glass house with Quinn, trapped forever, and love every minute. That says it all right there. She’s my person.
She stirs in my arms, looks up at me to see if I’m awake, and when she sees that I am, she smiles.
“Morning.”
Her blond hair is all over the place. I love thejust woke uplook on her.
“Good afternoon, sleepy head. That was quite a night.”
She sighs as though she can’t believe she slept so late. But we were up half the night—and it was amazing. “In my defense, the night was black, the moon was full, the stars were bright, and I was left alone with you. What followed was nature in its element.”
“Nature, huh. How very primal. I don’t believe that for a minute.”
“Then what was it?”
“Love.”
She kisses me softly. “Touché.”
With Quinn in my arms, I am a happy man. To have her back after believing she was gone from my life makes me appreciate her every second of every day. I’m not sure how I’ll function, being that I want her by my side at all times. I’m filled with anxiety when we’re apart. I guess that’s something I’ll have to work through. It won’t be easy.
“I suppose we need to get back. Are the girls with... Bree?” she asks.
“I called early this morning. Actually, the girls are with my mom. I think Bree’s moving out.”
“How do you feel about that?”
“Trick question?”
She blinks heavily. “No.”
“I’ll miss her, and so will the girls. But it’s for the best.” I don’t mention the awful things she did. Some things are better left unsaid. She did so much more good than bad. I’ll focus on that. I wouldn’t have survived the darkest time of my life without her. I hope she’s okay. The pain in her eyes haunts me, especially knowing I put it there. Like I said, brutal.
Quinn’s eyes darken just a bit. I know she’s still a little insecure. I plan to erase any and all uncertainty from her mind. I’ll kiss it away if I have to. Hmmmm, that’ll be interesting.
“We’d better get back,” she says again. “We can’t leave the girls with your mom for too long. She has enough on her plate.”
“That’s not what she said.”
“What do you mean?”
“Mom told me in no uncertain terms that if we set foot anywhere near her or the girls anytime within the next forty-eight hours, she’d lock us out and ignore us.”
“Are you serious?”
“Absolutely.”
“I guess I won’t argue with that.”
“Me neither.”
Quinn stretches like a content cat. “How’s Jordyn?”
“Mom said she’s running through the house and playing as if nothing happened. She has to remind her to be careful with her arm.”
“Crazy girl. Kids are so resilient.”
“So are we, Quinn. We can pick up where we left off. You know that, right?”
