“Carter.” Makayla has her hand on my arm. She’s been saying my name for a while, but it was like she was talking to me from the other end of a tunnel. “Please, stop. He’s had enough.”

I straighten up. My chest is heaving.

I didn’t mean to lose control. Especially not in front of this amazing, kind, caring woman.

“Come on,” I say. “Let’s get out of here.”

She links her arm through mine and we head for the door. When I look down at her, she smiles.

I’m so relieved I haven’t scared her off.

“You’ll see!’’ Graham shouts from behind us. “You’ll be sorry! You’ll rue the day you laid hands on Graham Bastow. Mark my words!”

I stop at the door.

To the side of me, there’s an expensive-looking vase. It probably cost more than my house.

I put my hand on the rim and look back at the pathetic piece of shit still lying on the floor in his kitchen.

“Don’t you fucking dare!” Graham shouts.

“What? This?” I say, knocking it off the table and on to the floor.

“No!’’ Graham slides along the floor screaming like he’s just witnessed his child being murdered right before his eyes. “My vase! My precious, precious vase! How could you! You brute! It was a one of a kind! Eleven centuries old.”

I look down at the hundreds of tiny shattered pieces scattered across the floor. “And now it’s garbage.”

I put my hand around Makayla’s shoulder and we walk out into the blazing sun.

The sounds of Graham screaming and crying fill the air as I open the door for my girl and help her in.

Her breasts graze against my arm as she jumps up into the cab. I get an eyeful of her thicc, delicious ass, too.

So what if I just ruined my career? I’m walking out of here with the woman of my dreams. That’s all that matters.

“Turn around!” It’s finally hitting me what’s just happened. “I have to go back. Maybe if I can just talk to him for a while, he’ll understand it wasn’t my fault.”

Carter keeps on driving. His huge hand resting on top of the steering wheel. His incredibly handsome profile shaded in the shadow of the sun behind him.

“You go back there now,” he says, “you’ll only stir up more trouble.”

“But I need that job!”

Panic starts coursing through me. The idea of my mom not getting the medicine she needs is too much to bear.

I had it all under control.

Until this stupid party, everything was going fine. For once in my stupid life, things were starting to work out. But I knew it was too good to be true.

“Don’t worry. I’ve got it covered.”

“You’ve got it covered?” Tears start pouring down my face. I’m having difficulty breathing. Is this what it feels like to die? “My mom,” I gasp. “What am I going to do about my mom?”

Carter pulls over on the side of the road. He turns the engine off and gently rubs my shoulder.
