“No.” I grip his arm and pull him to me. We kiss. Our chests clamp together and I swear I can feel his heart beating like it’s my own. “I’m not going to hide anymore. I’m not going to let someone else fight my battles for me.”

“Willa!” My ex’s voice is a frantic scream. A machine gun roars to life in the other room. “Get out here now, bitch. Before you make me really fucking angry!”

“Fuck you, Terry. You’re a piece of shit!” I yell back.

A torrent of bullets smacks the bedroom wall. They fly through the plasterboard and destroy the window on the opposite side of the room. Maybe answering wasn’t such a good idea. He didn’t know where we were. Now we’re sitting ducks.

“You have another one of those guns?” I ask Kaiden.

“You know how to use it?”

I bite my lip. It’s been years since I held a firearm. But desperate times call for desperate measures.

“Kinda,” I say.

“Okay.” He fishes another gun out of his sports bag. It feels unbelievably heavy. “You’re going to provide cover fire. It doesn’t matter where you shoot. Just don’t shoot me. I’ll crawl along the floor and take them out. It’s our best option. It’s our only option.”

“Cover fire.” I repeat his words like I’m in a dream. I never really thought it would come down to this.

He cups my face in his hand. More bullets slam through the wall. They whizz over our heads. Terry isn’t going to wait much longer before he storms in.

“Whatever happens, I’m glad I met you, Willa.”

I squeeze his fingers and kiss him. “I’m glad I met you, too, Kaiden.”

He gives me a whole box full of bullets and then squats down with his back against the door frame. Using his hands, he instructs me to lay behind the corner of the bed. Using the sturdy, expensive wood as a barrier between me and any stray bullets.

I look at him as he counts down with his fingers.

Three.

“You’re mine, you bitch,” Terry growls.

Two

“All clear in here, boss.” A voice I don’t recognize joins Terry’s.

“And here,” says another man.

I wonder how many people he has with him. Hopefully, it’s only two. Any more than that, and I really doubt we’ll be able to beat them.

Now!

Kaiden spins around and dives onto the floor. I empty my clip above his head as he shoots slowly. Methodically.

I hear a body drop to the ground. The another. My finger presses the trigger even after there aren’t any more bullets left.

CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK

I’m so scared I’m running on autopilot. The groans and moans of men in pain fill my ears. My nose stings with the acrid smell of gunpowder.

A smile spreads across my lips. Maybe we really will get out of this thing alive.

Together.

“Get down!” Kaiden leaps to the ground and covers his head with his hands.

A huge boom hurts my ears. When I open my eyes, half the wall is missing and I can see Terry standing on the other side with a shotgun in his hands. He’s grinning. There’s blood trickling down his face. His shirt’s torn. I don’t know what I ever saw in him.
