“Is that a…”

“Yup,” Terry smiles. It's the first time I've seen him happy since I met him. I'm not sure which is more terrifying, “horses. The boss sure does love him some horses.”

“Great.”

Could this day get any worse?

I swear, I wouldn’t be surprised if a camera crew jumped out from behind the nearest bush and told me it’s all an elaborate prank. I feel like I’m on one of those lame reality tv shows. Like the one Aston Kutcher used to host... but worse.

As Jacob Fury gets closer, I put on my game face.

First impressions are important.

This man didn’t become one of the richest men in the world by messing around. A job with him could change my life for the better.

I straighten my back. Hold my chin up high. I smile, even though inside I want to cry.

“Miss. Darling?” He says, stopping in front of me.

He doesn’t get down from his horse, and I have to crane my neck up to look him in the face.

“That’s right,” I say. “But people normally just call me Poppy.”

“Poppy.” He rolls the word around his mouth. My name’s never sounded so good.

I swear, I’ve seen pictures of him online, but it’s nothing compared to the real thing.

Jacob Fury has to be one of the best-looking men in the world.

He looks like he’s just walked out of a GQ magazine.

Even in the pouring rain, his hair is perfect. The powerful gleam of his bright green eyes is almost mesmerizing. His huge thighs bulge against the material of his tight-fitting jeans.

I bite my lip to stop myself from groaning.

“Can you ride?” he asks.

“I’ve never even been this close to a horse before,” I admit.

“A city girl.” He smiles at me and my legs go weak. I stumble to the right. My high heels get caught in the long grass. Terry catches me before I fall splat on my face.

In an instant, Jacob is by my side. He’s looking into my eyes with real concern on his face.

My heart throbs with a desire I’ve never known before.

“Are you okay?” he asks.

“I’m fine.” He puts his hand on my shoulder and my whole damn body turns to mush. I feel like I could just float away on the nearest cloud. “It’s these shoes. They’re not really designed for this kind of terrain.”

He looks down at my feet. I’m wearing a skirt and my legs are on full display. His eyes linger on my bare skin. I can’t help but feel excited.

“Yes,” he purrs, still looking at my body, “but you look amazing.”

I jump downfrom my horse and pass William, the stable boy, my reigns.
