Chapter Six
Colt
She pulls away from me and folds her arms across her chest. Her mouth is an angry pink line across her face. Her eyebrows a perfectly sculpted scowl that melts my heart and fills my veins with anger. Anger at myself...
It was me who did this to her. It was me who made her feel this way.
My eyes drift down to her cleavage. I can’t help myself. The soft, pale glow of her skin is like a lighthouse in a storm. I’ve been thinking about her all day. Imagining what she’d look like in a dress. But the picture in my head was nothing compared to the real thing.
“You stood me up,” she says again.
“I tried to call,” I butt in before she can say anything else. Before she can say something that will end my chances of being her boyfriend… of being her husband.
But my words ring hollow. I sound like a whiney teenager making excuses for why he didn’t get his homework in on time.
I take a step closer. Looking down into her glowing green eyes. “I’m sorry, Olivia,” I say. “I know how much this meant to you. I should have been here. Heck, I would have been here if I could. I promise. But sometimes my job is a pain in the ass. If I get called in, then I can’t just make up an excuse and skive off. My boss knew I wanted to be here more than anything else in the world. But there was an incident…” I trail off. I’ve never been great with words, and I silently curse myself for not being able to express myself properly. All those guys in the rom-coms always seem to know exactly what to say. But that’s not how it is in real life. Not for me, anyway. I can feel that this might be the most important moment in my life. That if I don’t say the right thing, I could totally blow it with Olivia. That if I don’t convince her how much I care for her, how much I love her, I’ll be doomed to spend the rest of my life alone.
I take a deep breath and decide I just need to tell her the truth. Reveal my emotions. Don’t hold anything back. At least then, if it doesn’t work, I’ll know I’ve done everything I can to win her over.
“I really like you,” I start, my voice catching in my throat. I’m not used to sharing my emotions like this. I’m more of ashowhow I feel kind of guy. But maybe that’s my problem. Maybe I need to get out of my comfort zone and open up. If that’s what it takes to make her mine, then that’s exactly what I’m going to do. “I more than like you... I haven’t stopped thinking about you since the moment I laid eyes on you. Morning… noon… night. You’re the most beautiful, amazing woman I’ve ever met. I never believed in love at first sight… I always thought it was some stupid gimmick they put in movies and books. But now I know it’s true. I feel like I’ve been struck by lightning. Like my world will never be the same again. Just looking at you… seeing you smile… it feels like my heart’s about to explode, but in a good way. Like I can actually feel the love inside me pumping through my body.” I look away, unsure whether my words are having the desired effect. If the boys down at the station could see me now I'd never let it down.
But then I feel her move towards me. I turn back and she reaches out. I take her hand in mine and kiss the backs of her fingers. They taste sweet and smell of perfume. My cock twinges with desire at the mere touch of her.
“You really mean all that?” she whispers, her eyelids fluttering. The sun shines on her face from the side. Lighting up her hair like a molten brown halo.
I push a strand of hair behind her ear and smile. “I’ve never meant something quite so much in all my life.”
She melts against my body. Her ear pressing against my chest. My arms wrap around her, and I stroke little circles in the crook of her back.
“This doesn’t mean you’re totally forgiven,” she mumbles.
“I know,” I say, kissing the top of her head. “Just give me a chance. I’ll show you how much I care. Show you I’m in this for the long haul.”
She looks up at me with a cheeky smile on her face. I lower my mouth to hers and we kiss. Our tongues collide. My fingers stroke her jaw as my hardness presses into her stomach.
“How about we get out of here?” she purrs, our lips not separating for a second.
“Where do you want to go?” I ask.
“Anywhere.” She kisses me again and runs her hand over my jaw. “As long as I’m with you.”
Chapter Seven
Olivia
I hold his hand and we walk off across the field next to the country club. There’s a large oak tree in the distance, and our feet just seem to head there of their own accord.
Butterflies dance in my belly. I haven’t been this nervous in years. Not since we opened Sweets ’n’ Treats. But this is a different kind of apprehension.
I’ve been dreaming about Colt all week. But now he’s actually here, and we’re heading off to a secluded spot... alone.
I’m worried I’ll mess it up. I haven’t been with a man in years. I’m not very experienced. What if I’m not good enough? What if there isn’t a connection?
All these thoughts fly through my head, and before I realize it, we’re standing under the huge oak tree. The sound of the breeze rustles the leaves above our heads.
He holds my face in his hand and kisses me softly on the lips.
“You’re the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” he groans.
