“Heather,” my mother called, her voice stern and assertive. “Let go of my son—now.”

I could feel Heather’s grip loosen as she kept repeating, “Please.”

“Sorry,” I whispered once she had completely let go of me. I kept walking until the reeking and humid night air of late June plugged my nostrils. Then I took a deeper breath. There was not much I found more invigorating than the trashy, dirty, stinking air of New York City. I was on my way to get my girl.

As soon asI walk inside Lina meets me at the door.

“Fuck, what took you so long?” She shakes her head. “Never mind. I’ll worry about him. And you get her.”

“Is that why Mina called me?” I ask following Lina. “Lila is cockblocking you?”

Lina turns but doesn’t look at me or slow her pace. “Yes, indeed.”

Then I see her. Her black dress is so high up her thigh that I can almost glimpse my favorite place. She looks absolutely stunning tonight. I want her. Like gravity, her eyes lock on mine. My chest tightens as my smile wavers. Is she happy to see me? I can’t tell. She and Lynx stand up as if they are about to leave together, making me wonder if I’m too late.

CHAPTER18

A Change of Heart and Heat

DELILAH O’SHAY

The strangest thing just happened. Lina, arms wide open to embrace me and wearing a red bandage dress, sashayed over and in a singsong voice said, “Lilly, so glad you can make it. Do you mind if I steal Lynx for a moment?” She kissed near one of my cheeks and then the other.

Lynx and I raised our eyebrows at each other. Something had just happened between us before Lina and Orion arrived.

We were still sitting on the sofa when he had asked, “You would go out with me?” He sounded as if it would surprise him if I said yes.

“Who wouldn’t?” I said.

“But I work a lot,” he offered up.

I tilted my head from one side to the other. “So do I.”

“My family’s mad,” he said with a laugh.

“So is mine.”

“Sorry, Lilly…” He clicked his teeth and winked. “I got you beat there.”

“How so?”

“Whenever my family gets together my mother and my aunt fight like Godzilla and King Kong.” He curled his fingers and pushed one hand at the other, and then back and forth to orchestrate how they fight. “You’re sitting at the dinner table with these people and then wham, you’re in the middle of aPinky and the Brainworld takeover plan orchestrated by my father and my uncle like the shit they cooked up with the Lords.”

I jerked my head back. “What shit did they cook up with the Lords?”

“Can’t tell you,” he said as if he didn’t at all regret letting that little revelation slip. I thought he was done until he raised a finger almost in slow motion and said, “Also my father will pile it on by making slick remarks about how disappointed he is that I’m in professional sports instead of tech.”

“But you own the baseball team. That’s a huge deal.”

“Not to him.”

“Wow,” I mouthed, and then quickly shifted in my seat, allowing the front of my body to face him as a question came to mind. “So, Lynx, are you telling me this to dissuade me from liking you?”

Wearing a crooked smile, one of Lynx’s eyebrows shot up. “You like me?”

I snorted, chuckling. “I think that’s been established.”
