Iwasfishing. “I’m not fishing.”

“Yes, you are. But it’s okay. I like that about you. I knew he worked on the case against the Carmichael Trust, but I had no questions. I wanted to get him away from you.”

I nestled myself deeper into his embrace, happy he’d admitted what I had suspected. “What was Dale doing there in the first place? Are he and Bryn still friends?”

“He was never Bryn’s friend.”

“But he used to always come to our dorm to see her. They would spend the night together too.”

Jasper’s body tensed up against me. After a few beats, he said, “Dale is Asher’s friend.”

I shook my head. “No. He used to come to our dorm room at least twice a week to see Bryn. They’d go to her bedroom and stay in there for hours.”

He grunted thoughtfully. “Is that so?”

“You didn’t know?” I asked.

“No, I didn’t.”

Damn it, I hoped I hadn’t gotten Bryn in trouble with her eldest brother, who was certainly the master of all of their universes.

“Listen, I just don’t want you talking to that guy,” Jasper said. “Understand?” He was back to being controlling again, which turned me off just as much as it turned me on.

“Why do you say that? Is he dangerous or something?”

“He likes you.”

Something inside me wanted to test our potential for a relationship that went beyond my stay at the Christmas mansion.“Well, I won’t be single for all my life. And he’s cute and kind of successful too,” I said, even though I still suspected Dale was the one who had been banging Bryn before the party.

Jasper ground against me so hard with his deflated cock that he lifted my hips off the bed. Then he held me so close and tight that I winced.

“I don’t understand why you care what I do when I leave here,” I said breathlessly.

“What do you want from me, Holly?”

My heart skipped a beat, happy he’d referred to me by my first name. “What do you want from me? You’re the one who snuck into my room last night and then directed me to this bed this morning, not to mention what we did in your office. You’ve been running our show, Jasper.”

“You could’ve said no.”

I closed my eyes tightly. “You’re wrong. I couldn’t.”

“I wasn’t going to force you to do anything you didn’t want to do.”

“I know,” I whispered. “I wanted to do it. I can’t stop doing it with you.”

Silence fell between us. I expected Jasper to release me and make an excuse to send me away. Instead, he planted a tender kiss on my shoulder. “I didn’t expect this either,” he said. “I don’t…”

I waited for him to finish whatever he was going to say. It soon became apparent he wasn’t going to do that.

“You don’t what?” I asked.

“I have a lot of fucking obligations, Holly.”

I recalled his conversation with Arthur Valentine. “What sort of obligations?”

Even though he had nothing to say, the tension in his body spoke loudly. I wondered if I should mention Arthur Valentine. There was no way to do it without lying or admitting I’d been exploring their secret passages. However, it was the first time since we’d begun our little rendezvous that Jasper had been so open with me. Now was the time to milk him for all I could.

“Are you still thinking about running for president in the election? I mean, first you have to get past the primaries, but I’m sure you have people who can help you with that?”
