“Okay,” I kissed the top of her head. “I won’t kill him.” Yet.

She wrapped her arms around my waist, and held on like I was her safety. It was in that moment that I realized, it didn’t matter if she could handle my world. She didn’t have a choice because she was mine and I was hers. I’d burn the world down for her, all she had to do was ask.

The position my father expected me to take, my money, my last name, none of it meant anything if I didn’t have her. I’d give it all up in a heartbeat.

“I need to get you to the hospital.” She didn’t look too bad, and I was probably overreacting, but she should get checked out.

“No,” Emma argued. “I want to go home.”

If home was where she wanted to go, then home was where I would take her. I could call a doctor to come there.

I scooped her up in my arms and headed for the door, pausing to look back at the beaten mess groaning on the floor.

“Your days are numbered fucker. I’d enjoy them if I were you.”

The doctor saidEmma was fine, and gave her some pills for the pain. I left her to get some rest in her room. I had no idea where Mitch was, he wasn’t answering my texts or calls, which meant he was probably gambling.

His sister was attacked, and he was out spending her money. I’d have that conversation with him later. Right now, I had other things to deal with. Like a certain professor who was still breathing.

Creaking the door open, I peeked in on Emma. She was fast asleep with her pink comforter wrapped around her. So far, there were no signs of nightmares, which was a good thing. My adoptive brother Junior had a rough childhood, and would sometimes wake up screaming.

I didn’t know what happened to him. Whenever I asked, I was told I was too young to understand. But whatever it was, it must’ve been bad. Junior was a tough son of a bitch, not a lot shook him.

Emma didn’t have a tough bone in her body. I blamed myself for that, and Mitch. We should’ve looked into that asshole. He didn’t fit the professor vibe. He walked around campus like he was one of the students. I should’ve seen this coming.

Because of my failure, she’d been hurt. Well, he would never hurt her again.

I quietly shut the door and pulled out my phone.

Emma made me promise that I wouldn’t kill that motherfucker, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t have someone else take care of it. Unfortunately, that meant calling someone I didn’t want to. My would be father in-law.

I dialed the number and huffed out a sigh, “Here goes nothing.”

Preston’s voice was just as cold on the phone as it was in person.

“What do you want Vahn?”

“I need a favor.”

“Is this about breaking the contract?”

What? “How do you know about that.”

“Mason told me.”

Fucking uncle Mason. Great.

Letting out a grumble, I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Did he tell my dad too?”

“Mason’s an idiot but he’s not that stupid.”

Okay, I couldn’t argue with that. My uncle was an idiot.

The next thing out of Preston’s mouth caught me off-guard. “Did you fuck my daughter, Vahn?”

“What!? No.” Where the hell did that come from? Did Trina say something to him? I was screwed if she wanted this marriage to happen.

“Do you want to fuck my daughter?”
