He heard the excitement in her voice and grinned. “Yes, but that stays between us. I just believe in being prepared. After you talk to Marcus, cancel my board meeting tonight and reschedule it for whatever evening next week works for everyone.”
“Got it. Anything else?”
“Yes, the man who kidnapped Kali was killed at my brother’s house. It will probably be on the news tonight. If you get any calls from anyone wanting information, tell them I’m unavailable and I have no comment at this time. I’ll fill you in on everything when I get to the office in the morning.”
“Oh my God, is everyone okay?”
“Physically, yes. Robbie has some issues he’ll have to work through, but it’s over. Kali will be home tomorrow.”
“I’m sorry it came to that, but I can’t say I’m sorry he’s out of the picture.”
“Yeah, me, too.” Delaney walked into the room. “Gotta go.”
She looked exhausted, and he didn’t like that haunted look in her eyes. His girl needed some pampering, and he was just the man to do it.
Chapter Eighteen
“Go take a shower or a bath. You’ll feel better for it. Then put on something comfortable and come find me.”
Delaney wrinkled her nose. “What’s with the bossiness all of a sudden?”
Zach had never tried to boss her around before, but he’d been the boss of bosses from the moment she’d finished her IA interview. As soon as she had been free to leave, Zach had taken charge of her person. He’d whisked her out of the house and into his car. When she’d told him he could drop her off at her apartment, he’d laughed. She would have given any other man an earful for the manhandling, but she secretly liked that he’d taken over. She didn’t have the energy to think or make decisions.
He stepped into her space, put his hands on her shoulders, and leaned his face near hers. “Iamthe boss of you tonight.” He turned her around and slapped her butt. “Go.”
She glanced back at him. “Did you really just spank me?” Mercy but that smoldering look in his eyes was hot, and that attitude was totally doing it for her.
“You know I did. And Delaney, I’ll do it again if you don’t obey.”
Delaney. It was weird thinking of herself as Delaney after being Harry for so long, but she liked it. She could absolutely be both feminine and badass at the same time. And heaven help any of her fellow detectives who thought it would be fun to razz her about it.
Although a bath sounded lovely, she decided on a shower. For one thing, she was so tired that she’d probably fall asleep and drown if she went with the bath. But more important, a shower was quicker, which meant she would be back to Zach sooner.
She closed her eyes as the water washed the shampoo from her hair but immediately opened them. Damn, she didn’t want to be seeing Davidson’s body behind her eyelids. Was that going to happen when she tried to sleep? God, she hoped not. She hadn’t taken any pleasure from shooting him, but she’d had no choice. She made a wish that she’d never have to kill another person again.
“Delaney,” Zach said from the other side of the closed door.
“Yeah?” She turned off the water.
“I’m coming in.”
“Ah…” She grabbed a towel. The last time Zach had seen her naked was eight years ago. Until she found out why he wasn’t kissing her, he wasn’t getting that privilege again. And of course he didn’t wait for permission before barging in. The boss had arrived! She crushed the smile that threatened to appear on her face. Couldn’t let him see that Dominant Zach excited her.
“It occurred to me that telling you to put on something comfortable would translate to body armor and weapons strapped to your body.” He held out a silky black robe that looked two sizes too big for her. “Put this on.”
“Whose is that?”
“Mine. Don’t wear anything under it.” He shot her a wicked smile that sent tingles down to the parts Harry had forgotten existed but that Delaney remembered oh so well. After his gaze roamed over her towel-clad body, his eyes doing that smoldering thing again, he walked out without another word, leaving her practically panting in his wake.
She didn’t know where this new and exciting side of him was coming from, and she never would have thought she’d like it, but she did. Did she ever. It was tempting to layer up with every piece of clothing she’d brought with her just to show him he wasn’t the boss of her, but that was Harry talking. Delaney slipped on the slinky robe and went looking for Zach while wearing not a thing underneath. Whoa her.
It took a few minutes, and it was like going on a scavenger hunt for the prize, but she finally found him in his bedroom, sitting in a chair, a glass holding something the color of amber dangling from his hand. His gaze tracked her as she came into the room. The breath swished so loudly from her that he heard it and smiled.
“Don’t just stand by the door,” he said in a low voice that raised the hairs on her arms. “Come here.”
“Said the spider to the fly.”
He chuckled. “The spider ate the fly. I have a feeling you wouldn’t mind that at all. I remember how you used to scream my name when my mouth was on you”—his gaze fell the area of her hips—“there.”
