Harry blinked at her partner. “Right here?”

“You’re not Harry. Who are you and what have you done with her?”

Oh, he was being funny. Cops poured into the room, and once she made sure Robbie was being seen to, she turned her attention back to Zach.

“She’s Delaney,” Zach growled, pulling her tighter against him.

“You heard him. I’m Delaney.” Her gaze fell on Zach’s lips, and she forgot her partner was standing a few feet away, watching her in fascination. She put her mouth next to Zach’s ear. “I have to do detective stuff for a while, but don’t go far. I have plans for you.”

He’d been close to dying, and that had opened her eyes. She was claiming him for herself, and the sooner he got that, the better.

“Do your plans include kissing me?” he said, a wicked grin on his face as he peered down at her.

“What’s with me”—she pointed between them—“being the one to kiss you?”

“It’s going to take hours to explain that, Hot Cop.” He pushed her away. “Go do your thing, and then we’ll talk.”

Hot Cop? She glanced at Gabe. “He’s allowed to call me Hot Cop, but if you do, I swear you’ll live to regret it.”

Gabe sighed, his gaze going to Zach. “She’s always threatening me. Can you do something about that?”

“Doubtful. She never listens to me.”

“Ha ha. You two are funny.” She glanced at Gabe. “Call the boss, tell her she needs to send IA out.”

“Already did.”

“What’s IA?” Zach asked.

“Internal Affairs. They’re going to have to investigate, make sure I had reason to fire my gun.” When he scowled, she said, “It’s standard procedure.”

“You saved my life. Thank you,” Robbie said, coming up to them and pulling her into a tight hug.

“Ah, you’re welcome, but loosen up. I can’t breathe.”

“Sorry. I’m feeling a little crazy right now.” He let go of her, then wrapped his arms around Zach. “I’m so damn sorry. This was all my fault.”

Zach patted his back. “I’m not going to say it wasn’t, but I know you didn’t intend for any of this to happen. Tomorrow you and I will sit down and have a long talk. Right now I’m just glad that we’re standing here, still breathing.”

“Why are there police cars outside?”

Harry glanced at the stairs, cringing at the sight of Misty rushing down. Zach stepped in front of her, stopping her from entering the room. “Go upstairs, Mom. We’ll come up and explain what happened.”

She peered over his shoulder, her gaze narrowing on Robbie, and then she frowned at Zach. “What did you do to him?”

Oh, for God’s sake. Delaney moved to Zach’s side. “What did he do? Try saving his brother’s—”

“He helped save my life.” Robbie pushed between Zach and their mother. “Everything that happened here is on me, so lay off him, Mom.” He brushed by her and ran up the stairs.

“What’s he talking about?” She peered over Zach’s shoulder, her gaze sweeping the room, taking in the cops standing over Davidson’s body. “Is that… Oh my God. It is.” She screamed.

Harry put her hand on Zach’s arm. “Get her out of here, and go see about your brother. Gabe will go up with you. Don’t compare stories with Robbie. Both of you will be questioned as soon as an Internal Affairs investigator arrives.”

“Got it.” He touched her shoulder, then picked his mother up around her waist and carried her upstairs.

Gabe paused next to her. “You okay?”

She glanced at the body. “I think so, but it really hasn’t sunk in yet.” Davidson’s eyes were open, and it felt as if he was staring at her. She shuddered and tore her gaze away.
