“I have two,” Harry said.

Gabe knew what was coming and narrowed his gaze on Winslow, not wanting to miss the senator’s reaction.

“Where were you on Friday night between seven and ten, and did you kill Sheri Carstad?”

The senator stared at Harry as if she’d lost her mind. Gabe was as sure as he could be that Senator Winslow was truly shocked.

“Sheri’s dead?”

“Answer my questions, Senator,” Harry said.

“No,Delaney, I did not kill Ms. Carstad. As to where I was Friday night, unless you’re charging me with murder, that isn’t any of your business. If you require another meeting with me, it will be with my attorney present. Now if you’ll excuse me, I must leave for my luncheon.”

“I’m not fond of clingy women,” Harry mimicked.

Gabe glanced across their two desks. She’d fumed all the way back to Dark Falls. Four hours of hearing what a slimeball Senator Winslow was had him about ready to pull out his gun and shoot his own self.

“Did you see that smarmy smile he gave me?”

“Yep, it was hard to miss.”

“He didn’t even say he was sorry to hear she was dead or ask how.”

“True. But just because he has a smarmy smile and doesn’t like clingy women doesn’t make him a killer.”

“You don’t think it’s suspicious that he refused to say where he was Friday night?”

“Considering what we now know about his extracurricular activities, I think it’s entirely possible he was with a woman who was not his wife. If so, he’s not about to tell us that unless he’s boxed into a corner.”

She glared at him. “So you think he’s innocent?”

“I didn’t say that. Yes, he’s a douchebag, and it would be satisfying to slap handcuffs on him. But I just don’t see him hanging around Dark Falls, stalking Cara.”

“Maybe he paid someone to kill Sheri, and that man is the one stalking her.”

“Possibly. Here’s what we have so far. Three suspects, the two Shermans and our slimy senator.”

“All three are slimy if you ask me.”

Gabe snorted. “You think all men are slimy.”

“That’s true,” Mason England, one of their fellow Major Crimes’ detectives, said as he walked up.

Harry picked up Nate’s blue stress ball that had found its way to her desk and threw it at Mason. “It’s not like the male species doesn’t give me plenty of reasons to think that.”

Mason tossed Dahlia up, catching it when it came down. “Aww, Harry, you having a bad day?”

“Don’t go there with her, Mason. She’ll just shoot you,” Gabe said.

Eric Cantu, a detective fond of limericks, came up behind Mason. “There was once a lady cop from Dark Falls. Woe the man who gives her a catcall. She’d take out her mighty gun and shoot him in the—”

“Stuff it, Eric. In fact, bug off, all of you.” Harry picked up her purse. “It’s been a long day, and I’m outta here.”

Gabe went home and wondered why his house all of a sudden felt empty without an ugly dog and a sexy librarian.
