“Gabe,” she whispered as arousal simmered and then built inside her.

As if her whispering his name wasn’t good enough, he lifted onto his elbows. “Look at us. Look at me inside you.” He bent his head and peered between them. “Look, Cara. Have you ever seen anything so hot?”

When she obeyed, he slowed his strokes, letting her see the sight of them joined together. It was beautiful. He was beautiful. Her gaze lifted to his to see him watching her. She’d thought his eyes couldn’t grow darker, but they had, turning the dark green of forest moss after a rain.

“I’m there. Come with me. Now.”

His voice had rumbled the words, and it seemed as if he struggled to breathe. The cords on his neck were visible as he strained to wait for her. He reached between them, his fingers finding her swollen flesh.

She exploded when he touched her. She saw stars dancing in her vision. Screamed his name.

“That’s right,” he said in a rough voice, and then he buried his face against her neck.

His body tensed, and she felt tremors travel through him. “Cara mine,” he rasped into her ear.

“Gabe mine.” She felt his smile, the curve of his lips against her neck, and she softly sighed.

She wrapped her arms around his back, holding him close to her as a deep contentment like she’d never known before settled in her heart. He was an incredible and experienced lover, but it was more than that. It was what was between them, something so very special that she couldn’t begin to put it into words. It was the kind of love she’d seen between her parents and between David and Lisa. She hadn’t been sure she’d ever find a love like that, but maybe she had. If so, she was blessed.

Chapter Twenty

“Stop smiling,” Harry said, wrinkling her nose as if she smelled something bad. “It’s annoying.”

Gabe grinned at her. “That’s what happens when one is happy, Harry. You should try it sometime.”

“I’m perfectly happy,” she grumbled.

“Uh-huh.” She punched him. “Ouch. Stop beating up your partner. It isn’t nice.”

“Then stop smiling all the time. Makes me want to puke.”

He laughed. “Your turn will come, and when it does, I’m going to sit back and enjoy the show. Poor guy, though. He’s not going to have a clue what he’s dealing with.”

“There is no poor guy or any other kind of guy. Not now and not in the future.”

Even if the perfect man came along, she’d probably shoot him just because he was perfect for her. They were returning from lunch, and as they headed for the door of the police department, Gabe noticed Eric Cantu and a petite redheaded woman off to the side having what looked like a heated discussion.

“Who’s she?” he asked.

Harry glanced over at Eric and the woman. “Well that’s interesting.”

“Because?”

“She’s Merritt McKenna, a reporter for theDark Falls Daily. Wonder what that’s all about.”

Eric noticed them and moved to block their view of the reporter. “Definitely interesting.”

“At least he’s not smiling like a lovesick fool,” Harry said as they entered the building.

“Give it up, partner.” He pointed to his mouth. “This smile is permanent.”

“Oh swell.”

A month had passed since he and Cara were free to be together, and it had been the best month of his life. They were still getting to know each other and weren’t ready to talk about a future together, but they hadn’t spent a night apart since then. They were either at her house or his, and had clothes and toiletries at each other’s houses, eliminating the need for overnight bags. The dog even had supplies at his place. The past few days he’d started wondering how she’d feel about making their living together official. Maybe he’d ask her tonight.

That afternoon a package was delivered to him at the station, and when he saw the postmark, he tore into it. His father was a creative genius, and he’d expected something cool, but his dad had exceeded his expectations. He couldn’t wait for Cara to see it.
