Drew cupped her shoulders and glowered down at her.“Why in the hell is he calling you honey?”
The deputy’s eyebrows raised at the possessive way the man was acting.
“He’s just a friend of Adam’s.He knows he calls me honey.”
“I doubt he likes it...”
“If I might,” the deputy interrupted as he held up a hand.“You all can argue later.I had Joey stop me on the street and tell me you tried to kill him?”The deputy waited silently with a raised brow.
Hailey tried to take a step toward him but was stopped by the arm Drew wrapped around her middle. She scowled at Drew over her shoulder, then turned back to the other man and held out her hands and shook her head.“No, Brett.Drew was just trying to h—”
“Hush,” Drew growled and squeezed her a bit.He turned to the other man.“The guy had his hands on her, and she was telling him to stop, but he didn’t.”
The deputy’s mouth twitched.“So, youweren’ttrying to kill him?”
“I never said that,” Drew burst out.“I probably would have if she hadn’t stopped me.”
The deputy looked from the massive man to the tiny woman and wondered exactly how he thought she could have stopped him.
“Holy shit, if it isn’t G.I.Joe.”
Drew's head whipped up.His expression softened, and he chuckled.
“And if it isn’t Barney Fife.I thought you’d be on the other side of the bars by now, Daniel.”
Both men laughed.
Hailey slid to the side and watched the sheriff walk around the end of the store aisle and slap Drew on the back. Both she and the deputy stared as the other men laughed and pounded on each other as they asked each other questions.
“So how long are you in town, or are you back for good?”
“I’m back.”
Daniel gripped Drew’s shoulder with one hand.“I’m glad you made it back.I worried ...a lot of people worried.”
“It’s good to be home,” he said, and pulled her against his side.
The sheriff looked back and forth, surprised, and then broke into a grin.“So that’s the way of it?”
Drew looked down at her and chuckled.“Yeah, it is.”
“What are you talking about?”she asked, puzzled.
Daniel shook his head and chuckled.
“We’ll talk later,” Drew said against her ear.
She snapped her teeth together.
“I always knew you guys would end up...”
Hailey jerked her head up when the sheriff stopped suddenly. She had just barely caught the subtle shake of Drew’s head and scowl. She tried to take a step away from Drew, only to be brought up in front of him and pulled back tightly against his chest.
Hailey could feel a blush shading her cheeks at the look on the other two men’s faces.Drew’s friend, Daniel, grinned, but the other one looked as confused as she felt.
“There have been a lot of changes since you were back last,” Daniel said.
Drew nodded.“Yeah, Adam has told me about the group of military guys that settled in the area and the club a few of them started.”
