“My sister called this morning,” I whisper, keeping my voice down. The radio helps give us a hint of privacy, although Bristol is seated beside me.

“Yeah? Anything special?” Kyler asks.

“She watches television,” I say, hoping that’s enough of an indicator of what we need to discuss when we get back to his place.

He shrugs nonchalantly. “That was inevitable. Someone you know would find out about us,babe.” He squeezes my hand. “Relax.”

How can I relax when I was too naïve to think about the agreement that far ahead? I mean, sure, I figured I might be in a few pictures with Kyler, but I never thought my sister would see the headline. I never thought he’d propose at a hockey game for everyone to see.

Mitchell pulls up to the house, and we all climb out of the car.

I head inside first, making sure the house is still secure. Kyler is right on my heel, with Lia and Bristol following behind.

I slip out of my shoes and head up the stairs.

“Where are you going?” Kyler asks.

“I’m just going to start dinner,” Lia says as she helps Bristol out of her sneakers. “Do you need me to do something first?”

“I was talking to my fiancée.” Kyler pins me with his stare.

The air rushes out of my lungs, and Lia’s eyes widen. “You two are engaged?” She doesn’t seem to get the message that Kyler is focused entirely on me, and for the first time, it scares me.

“What does that mean?” Bristol asks, peering up at us as she’s seated on the bench beside the front door. She kicks her feet wildly and wiggles her toes, bare of her shoes. Her socks are mismatched, but the kid doesn’t seem to care. Knowing Bristol, she probably insisted on wearing one unicorn sock and one bunny sock.

Lia quickly zips her lip and ushers Bristol into the kitchen. “How about you help me with dinner?”

“I don’t want to cook,” Bristol whines. “That’s your job.”

“You can draw me a picture while I cook?” Lia suggests as she guides her out of the hallway and into the kitchen, affording us a tiny bit of privacy.

“I was trying to avoid that,” I say and gesture toward the kitchen with Lia and Bristol.

“Upstairs.” Kyler is short and even-tempered. He grabs my hand on the way up the stairs, and I have half a mind to push him away, but I don’t.

I’m not sure what game he’s playing at, and even worse, I hate the fact that I may actually like it.

Well, not the games. I like Kyler. At least, I think that’s the reason for the butterflies in my knotted stomach. I chew on my bottom lip as he pulls me into his bedroom.

It smells like Kyler. Warm, woodsy, and thick. I try not to inhale, but it feels like I’m taking a hit. Kyler Greyson, the newest drug on the block. And I want to bring it to my lips and breathe it all in.

“Sit.” His one word is a command, and he untangles his hand, gesturing for me to approach his bed.

That is definitely not a good idea.

“I’ll stand,” I say. My mouth goes dry, and my tongue swipes out, trying to save me from embarrassment when I speak.

Kyler shrugs like he doesn’t really care whether I sit or stand. He’s trying to make me comfortable. Well, nothing about this conversation is about to be comfortable.

“We just told your daughter we’re engaged. Actually, technically, you did,” I say. I’m not usually one to point the blame, but this time it was all him.

“And I’ll explain it all to her later. But I had a good day, and I wanted to celebrate it with you.”

My voice betrays me as it comes out more like a squeak. “In your bedroom?” I’m confident my cheeks are flushed, and I shuffle backward, trying to keep ample distance between us. Not because I don’t trust Kyler. The truth is that I don’t trust myself.

How can I when I heard him last night?

He moaned my name.
