“You caught me. I followed you in here so that I could have my way with you,” Em says.

“Woman,” I growl, my heart hammering against my chest.

“What?” She wears that smile with pride as she steps closer, closing the gap between us. Her lips are parted, and her soft breath teases me as she stares up into my gaze.

Does she have any idea how turned on she makes me? The feelings she stokes are like a raging fire that’s burning down an entire city.

My fingers tug at her waist, pulling her against me.

“Put some pants on,” she teases, tossing my sweatpants at me that she grabbed from the top of the dryer.

I release my hold on her and pull the black sweats on, choosing to go commando.

She watches and exhales a heavy breath. “I need a cold shower,” she confesses. “I have to make it through dinner with your daughter sitting at the table oblivious to this.” Em gestures between us.

“I think she kind of already knows.”

“That we kissed,” Em says. “Sure. But the fact that I want to jump your bones?”

I already know the answer, but I like hearing her say it. “You want to have sex with me?” I ask.

Her cheeks turn crimson as she nods. “Yes. You’re not going to make me wait for the wedding, are you?”

The fake engagement.

For a moment, all of it felt real, and what we shared, it wasn’t fake. But her words jar me back to a sharp reality.

The smile falls as I shake my head. “No, Em. I’d never make you wait. I wouldn’t want to deny you of any type of pleasure, ever.”

“Is that a promise?” She shuffles her feet, and while she’s staring at me, I can sense the hesitancy creeping in like a thick fog.

I’ve been around Em enough the past couple of months to read her. She’s an open book, even if she doesn’t realize it. “After Bristol’s in bed, I’ll prove how much I want you.”

“I’d like that,” she whispers. “A lot.”

Dinner seems to drag on for hours, and Bristol refuses to go to bed. I swear it’s like my daughter has it out for me not to get laid.

In the past, when I wanted to hook up with a woman, I made sure Bristol wasn’t home, or I banged a chick at her place.

Neither of those is an option, and the second doesn’t appeal to me anymore.

“I’m not tired. I want to play a video game,” Bristol says. “There’s this paintball game which looks like so much fun. Can we download it?”

“Absolutely not!” I can’t believe Bristol’s suggestion at this hour.

“Please, Daddy. It’s almost my birthday. It can be a birthday present.”

“Your birthday is six months away.” I can’t believe this kid. I swear, she’s just trying to get under my skin tonight. Does she have a radar that detects that I want adult time?

“Upstairs, now!” I snap at her.

She grumbles and stomps up the stairs to her bedroom.

“Brush your teeth!” I shout upstairs at her.

Em is reading a book or at least pretending to feign interest in it. I don’t think I’ve seen her turn the page in twenty minutes, but I’ve also been distracted by a three-and-a-half-foot monster.
