“Thank you Heather,” Logan replies and winks at me before going back in the kitchen.
The conversation quickly goes back to horses when Dennis starts talking about the new Belgian draft he’s purchasing for the ranch as a workhorse.
“What?” Bree hisses. Her voice is low but loud enough to catch my attention as I’m sitting opposite her.
She’s talking to Ethan. He stops eating and looks at her.
“What? What?” he says.
“You keep looking at me like I have something on my face. What is it?”
He sets his fork down and the twitch in his lip is a tell that she’s just issued an invite for the old Ethan to come out and play.
“Your eyes,” he begins. “I noticed they’re green with specks of brown in them.”
Bree frowns. “So what? Yours are a seriously bright blue but do you see me looking at you?”
He chuckles. “Yours are unusual. It’s a pretty mutation that’s rare.”
Bree looks momentarily thrown.“Pretty?”
“Yeah, pretty.” He confirms with a smile and her face softens.“Muffin.”
At the mention of the pet name, which is actually cute if no one remembers the other parts to it, the tightness comes back to Bree’s face like she’s been zapped by lightning. The glare she gives him has me biting back a smile and doing my best to hold in the laughter.
“Prick,” she says under her breath.
“Sexy as fuck,” he replies in a hushed tone for her ears only, except I hear and when she looks at me with a shock riddled face, I cover my mouth to hide my laughter.
“Baby, come here,” Logan calls out to me from the kitchen.
I get up and make my way in, still smiling to myself.
“What’s funny? Don’t tell me my sister is still making fun of me,” Logan says.
“No, it’s Bree and Ethan.”
“You noticed that too?” he chuckles.
“Yes, of course I did. She’s never going to live down high school or the name Muffin.”
“And I don’t think he’ll allow her to.Look at this.” He moves over to the oven, opens it and takes out a pie.
It smells so good my mouth starts watering the second the aroma hits me.
“Wow. I can’t believe you can cook and bake so well.” I gasp.
Everything on the pie looks so perfect. It’s the perfect golden color with sugar on top and the adorning edges impeccable.
“Good, I’m glad you like it. It’s peach and apple pie.I haven’t done it in a while.I was thinking everyone could have it with ice cream or maybe just cream. What do you think?”
“Both. Let’s do both. I’m having both.” I wave my hands excitedly and my phone rings in my pocket at the same time.
I reach for it, not knowing who it is.Since the school started up though my phone has been ringing more.
When I look at the screen and see it’s Jodi, the same bubble of excitement takes me that always comes when I speak to my old dance teacher from Juilliard.
“Give me a minute. I have to take this.” I tell Logan and he nods.
