“Yeah. Dennis, her husband, was teaching me how to ride a horse and her sons helped too."I can’t get over how excited I am.It’s unexpected. "They cooked us a feast and even made me their special guacamole and crazy cheese.”

“What the heck is crazy cheese?” Her face lights up.

“I have no idea, but they called it that and it was blue.Tasted a little like a combination of nacho cheese and mozzarella. It was amazing. You know some things are best when you don’t know what they are.It was like that. So I rolled with it.”

We both laugh.

“I wish I could have gone with you, but I think it was wise to keep the numbers small to you and Logan.”

“I know. But after yesterday, I think they would have been happy to meet you.Next time I go, you are welcome to come. It’s Heather’s birthday in a few weeks and she said I could invite my friends to her party. We’ll most likely have to stay the night.”

“I’ll be there for sure. She sounds amazing.”

“I could imagine Heather having more things in common with your mom.” One of the things that was definitely evident growing up was that Kailin Cambray did not associate herself with peasants.

That’s what she called Bree’s mom, and she made sure she overheard her.

Bree laughs. “Yes, it does sound that way.Lord knows how mother number one was able to stand my common as much hillbilly presence in your home when we were little.”

Common as muck hillbilly. That’s exactly what she called Bree.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine. Behold we are still friends.I knew you weren’t like her. Now I know why. When did you last speak to her?”

“Before my father’s funeral. It was the day after he killed himself.I went to check on her, at the house, and guess what I found?”

Bree straightens and gazes on at me in anticipation.“What?”

“Her in bed with her plastic surgeon.”

Bree’s mouth falls open and her hands fly up to her cheeks.“Oh my God. What the hell?”

“Yeah. My parents cheating on each other was nothing new.” I found Dad with the maid once but he didn’t see me.Thank God.

I doubt if he would have had any shame, but still. That was not for my eyes.

“Wow. So mother number one hasn’t called you since you came here?”

“Nope. When I left L.A. I didn’t tell anyone where I was going. That didn’t stop her though from calling me.She didn’t care, Bree. Heather tried to reason it out by saying maybe it was because I wasn’t hers.It sure explains why she loved her dogs more than me.Those were her babies and Mom wasn’t the kind of woman with a maternal bone in her body. She didn’t want kids because she didn’t want to gain weight. If she ever gained a pound she’d have lipo.God forbid if she ever got stretch marks.”

Bree shakes her head. “What a way to think.I want a family someday. I really do.” She gazes at me dreamingly.

Me too, but it’s best I don’t talk about that.

Bree must see the slight shift in my mood and schools her face.

“Oh my, I didn’t mean to talk about stuff like that and make you remember the … past.”

“Don’t apologize.” I smile. “Of course I want to hear about what you want for the future.I can see you with a family.”

“Thank you. I want a big one. Got to find the right guy first though.”

Me too, again. And that makes me think of Logan.“You’ll find him. I know you will.”

“Thank you. That means a lot. So… does this list of party invites include Logan?”

Here we go.
