“Well, don’t thank me yet. Thank me when we find the bastard and we can stick his ass behind bars.”
“I’m thanking you now because it’s one hell of a lead.Do I even want to know what sort of system alerts you have set up?”
“Not if you want to keep using my services.”
He smirks then glances back over at me with a keen expression.“You sure you don’t want to talk about what’s bugging you.I saw you leave the club with Quinn the other night.I was hoping things were okay between you two.”
“Ethan, the less I say about her the better.I pray the next five and half months come quickly and then I can get back to living my life.” And forget her once and for all.
This is why people say to leave the past behind you.
It’s fucking true and when you rebel against some rules they just come back to bite you in the ass.
“Alright pal. Let’s get this son of a bitch.”
“Yeah, let’s get him.” He’ll be one less bastard on the road for me to worry about.
As we speed along it doesn’t take much for Quinn to come back to my mind.My worry is how I’m going to get through the next few months in the professional way she requested.
The shit that’s happening between us is exactly what worried me in the first place.
It was just that back then I didn’t know if she was the same old Quinn. My Quinn. Then the day came when I recognized my girl and I wanted her back.
It scared the shit out of me how badly I wanted her but now I know where we stand I need to start taking the right measures to get my ass in gear.
It’s not like I don’t know how this will end.
She never loved me in the first place. It wasn’t fair of me to be mad at her for the way she felt ten years ago, and it’s not fair now.
The solution is very simple.
What I need to do is leave Quinn Cambray alone.
I'll only talk to her about anything business related. That's it.Outside of business, I need to just leave her alone.
It takes an hour to get to the cabin. We still have a little bit of daylight on our side and we’re all set and ready to move in with backup in place and that warrant.
Except, the cabin looks deserted. When my guys have been on watch, they keep to the woods so as not to alert anyone to their presence.Billy has been here for nearly the whole week.
His car was also here. Now it’s not.
Ethan and I burst in guns blazing and it feels like I’m a marine again when I pull out my own gun.
A brief scan of the place reveals no one’s here but a mumbling noise I can’t quite place is coming from somewhere.
“Do you hear that?” Ethan asks.
“Yeah, I do.”
We listen carefully and I hear it coming out louder. It sounds like a person.
“The floor.” Ethan points to the floorboards.
I look around the area we’re standing but I can’t see an entrance we can use.
Then I remember some of these houses have a door leading into the basement fromoutside.I rush around the back of the house and see it.Ethan follows and we both pull it open.
The smell of blood is the first to hit me, along with the distinct sound of someone mumbling incessantly.
