“Hey, what kind of asshole dicksleeps in his truck to stand guard and make sure you’re safe?” he narrows his eyes at me.

“Thought you said you were working.”

“Busted,” he holds up his hands and gives me a curt nod.“So, I’m gonna call Mr. Mulligan and tell him I accept.”

“Me too.”

“I have some police business I have to take care of so I might not be around much next week, but you can call me.”

Call him, as in actually call him and he’d speak to me.I remember when I was so desperate to do that.

“Do I call your secretary?”

“Give me your phone.”

I pull out my phone from my purse, unlock it then hand it over to him.He then taps in a number, his number and hands it back to me.

I laugh when I see what he put his name as.

Asshole Dick.

“Asshole Dick?” I ask.

“Yeah. It has a nice ring to it and suits me.Don’t you think?”

I giggle. “I couldn’t agree more.”

“Ready to go?”

I glance around. I’m not ready to go yet.“Is it okay if I hang out here for a while?I’ll get a taxi to drop me back to the motel and get my stuff later.”

“Yeah, just be careful though.”

“I’ll be fine.”

“Cool, well I’ll be in touch,” he says in a businesslike voice as if he’s trying to be professional and hold on to the reason why we’re here.

Our encounter this morning didn’t feel like a business meeting though. It felt like I could be friends with him.At least for the time I’m here.

“Sure,” I say and he walks away. Before he gets to the door though I call out to him and he stops.

“Yeah?”

“I’m sorry you got shot. Bree told me.It’s probably old news… but you haven’t heard me say I was sorry to hear that happened to you.”

“Thanks. I guess you were right to worry something would happen to me.It did.”

“But you didn’t die. I’m glad you didn’t die.”

“I’m like a cat. Pretty sure I have six of my nine lives left to live.” With a smirk and a sexy as hell wink, he leaves me and when the door closes I feelweird.

I have that displaced feeling again but there was something soothing about seeing himtoday.

Something old and familiar I know I probably shouldn’t take comfort in.

But, I can’t helpmyself.
