I took to the streets for the rest of the day, searching out all the places we’d heard Billy hung out at.
I looked until I hit a dead end and decided to call it a day.
At ten,I checked in with Ethan to let him know I hadn't found anything and I'd resume my search tomorrow, then headed to the 7-11 to grab a few beers.
The sound of a familiar female voice catches my attention when I turn down the frozen food aisle.
“Is that what you say to all the girls?” the woman says and I realize it’s Quinn. She must be on the other aisle.
“Well you look like you work out,” comes a man’s voice.“I’m just saying with a body like that, you must. It’s very nice.”
I bite down hard on my back teeth.Who the fuck is that?
“Thank you, I do work out when I can.”
“I can tell. But even though I’m sure you can handle your bags I wouldn’t be any kind of gentleman if I didn’t offer you a ride back to the motel. We’re going to the same place.”
I know I should keep walking.Or at the very least mind my own damn business.I should have no qualms about her picking up a guy in the supermarket and going back to the motel with him. It’s what people do.
It’s just hard getting the guy inside me who’s stuck in the past to listen. That guy wants to find out who’s talking to her.
Maybe it’s tiredness or succumbing to craziness but I find myself walking closer to the shelves so I can listen properly.
“That’s really sweet of you, but I might decide to go somewhere else," Quinn replies."It’s a nice night for walking.”
“Sweetheart, the motel is five miles away.Walking these roads at this hour is just asking for trouble.Come on, I have a car. I can swing by whatever your next stop is and take you back to the motel.”
Insistency… a dead giveaway that this asshole is after a quick fuck.
“Who knows I might take you back and you might decide you want me to stay the night.”
That fucking does it. My legs move and when I turn down the aisle and see them I nearly lose my shit when I see the man talking to Quinn is Billy.
The one and only fucker I’ve been looking for all day.
Damn it.
The element of surprise I was hoping for with our first meeting will go right out the window if I get any closer.
But fuck, what am I supposed to do?Let Quinn get in a car with this creep?Or worse… allow his ass to take her back to the motel and force himself on her?
Or even worse than that, if Ethan is right and he’s the fucking killer we’re after.
I’m moving down the aisle before I can think more on it.
Quinn sees me first then Billy turns and narrows his eyes at me.He’s dressed up in a Ralph Lauren polo shirt, black slacks and loafers without socks. He looks like one of those country club preppy pricks I used to see hanging out with Quinn’s father.
“Logan,” she says but I’m not looking at her.I’m staring Billy down.
“Excuse me, do I know you?” he asks.
On the surface, he looks like a decent guy.Underneath that mask he's wearing, though, he’s probably dangerous as fuck. And if he is, I'll find out.
“Believe me pal, you don’t want to know me.”
“What the fuck?” He gives me an indignant glare akin tothe rich who like to abuse power because they can.
“I’ll be taking her back to the motel,” I inform him.
