Bree knows what happened last night in regards to Colton.I haven’t told her about showing the recording to Logan.
Watching it all again freaked me out because of the weight it carries and what I’d do if Riley gets his hands on it.
Obviously, that’s what he wants.Me and my evidence.
If there was one thing I know about my ex-husband, it’s that Riley Lanford always gets what he wants.Right now he’s working overtime, and I am scared.
Bree can see just how last night frightened me and has been playing mother hen all day.I can’t complain since I don’t mind the attention.Especially since I would have been by myself, for most of the day because Logan was working.
Telling Logan more of my secrets was hard.I’ve never told anyone that Riley used to beat me before.Hearing myself say it was harder.It made it real.
“I can cancel my date,” she offers and slides on to the sofa opposite me.
I give her a narrowed look. “Don’t you dare.You haven’t been on a date in forever.Go. I will be fine.”
I get the feeling that as much as she’d love to go out, she’s stalling because she’s not sure about this guy she’s seeing.His name is Piere. He’s an accountant and she’s already said she thought he might bore her with talk of himself.
She also met him online through a dating app.Since I’ve never considered dating anyone that way, I’m not sure what she’ll get when she meets him in real life.
“No, I should at least wait until Logan gets here.You said he’d be here soon, right?”
I look her over and laugh, realizing that she’s stalling.“Yes, he said he’d be here soon, but that could be a while yet.You don’t want to go on your date, do you?”
She pouts and sighs. “I’m in two minds.I’m worried about you and I don’t want to go leaving you here for someone I don’t know if I’ll even like.”
“There’s a cop outside watching the place so you don’t have to worry about me.”
Logan confessed he’d had people keeping an eye on me since the other week.Knowing someone is outside in case I need them helps.At the same time, it has been nice to have Bree here to talk to while we did the last minute admin stuff for the dance school.
“I know, but that’s not going to stop me from worrying my head off.I am glad Logan’s a bit more involved now.I can sleep easier at night.”
“Thanks for being here, Bree.It’s been great having you here.I do want you to go on your date though.You won’t know if you like him unless you try.Maybe he was different online.Some people talk themselves up.Maybe he’s like that.”
“You’re right. I’m just trying to find excuses.My last date didn’t exactly go well.”
She’s still upset about Bryce.“Did you really like Bryce that much?”
“I don’t know. I think so. I was excited when he asked me out.Really excited and I thought the date went well, except now that I think about it I think he just wanted to sleep with me.”
That sounds more like him.
“Unless that’s all you wanted, then maybe it was for the best.”
“I’m all up for fun, but I don’t want to sleep around.I want a guy I can consider settling down with.Someone serious and takes me seriously.It’s hard to get that.”
“I know. So, that’s all the more reason to go out and have fun.”
“I’ll go in fifteen minutes. That should get me there just on time.Maybe Logan will be here then.” She snuggles against the cushion.
“Thank you. It will be nice to have you for fifteen more minutes.”
“Good.”
“I wish I knew what to expect next.With Colton gone to God knows where, I don’t know if he’ll keep to his word and stay away, or report to Riley and cause more trouble.” Chances are he will stay away because he’s afraid of Riley,but he was also loyal to him for years.Loyalty is a thing that could take precedent over fear, so I really don’t know what to think.
“In my experience, people will always look out for themselves, Quinn.Self-preservation will be foremost in anybody’s mind, especially when they’re scared.”
“Yeah. I hope so.”
