Rein snarled but put the cell near his ear as Braelyn leaned close to listen. “Yeah. I’d love to chat with ya.”
“Every time I settle in for a bit, the bad guys show up. I’m a careful bloke. It’s not like I’m leaving a trail of breadcrumbs. At first, I thought it was coincidence. Bad luck. Whatever. Now I’m not so sure.”
Rein was silent.
“You still there?” Miller sighed into the phone.
“Thinking.”
“Think fast. I hate staying on too long.”
“A powerful mage could scry. With your hopping all over the place, though, that gets dicey.”
“Any other way? There’s no tracer on me. I’m sure of that. I change places, names, use cash. I’m a pro at covering my trail.”
“When you were almost nabbed, did a vamp bite you?”
Braelyn arched a brow when she stared at her mate.
“One did. Sonofabitchin’ bloke left a real mess on my neck. I snatched myself away from his choppers but almost bled out. Why?”
“If he was old and powerful, he could be tracking your blood. How much did he take?”
“Enough to make me know pain and pleasure. And I’m not into guys.”
“That’s how they’re tracking you, then.”
“Are there a lot of chaps out there who can do that sort of thing?” Miller sounded a little worried. He should be.
“Too many to identify.”
“Anything I can do to counter it?”
“Have a mage spell your blood.”
“I’d have to come in for that?”
Rein shrugged. “It’s no simple thing.”
“Can lots of your people do this spell?”
“I’m one.”
“Is there anything you can’t do, mate?”
“Yeah. Tolerate talking to you, asshole.” Rein sneered into the phone, sorry Miller couldn’t see his expression.
“Same. Tell luv I said ta.”
“I’m all over that.”
Braelyn snatched the phone before he could pop more shit. “Ta, Miller. Stay safe.”

Celenepulled the bedspread up to her neck, sniveling, feeling sorry for herself, and tossing wet Kleenexes into a growing pile. No one to talk to. At least no one who was human or sane. Jace hadn’t rescued her yet. What did that mean? Had she been caught? Could she find the new digs? Had she found no one to help? Or had she forgotten about Celene?
Stop, girl. Jace will come for me if she can. Now stop whining and get out of this damn bed before you kick your own ass.
