Dax floored the accelerator. “Damn pussy car.”

The speedy Aeternal got closer and closer until he hopped onto the rear bumper. The Prius jerked from side to side.

As Chiara seesawed with the movement, she gripped the dashboard. “Do something.”

Dax swung a feral-eyed glare at her while he pitched the wheel, trying to dislodge the unwanted rider.

The male stuck to the bumper like glue. He catapulted to the roof. The driver’s window shattered as a fist crashed through it. When the guy tried to leap into the vehicle, he jacked both feet into Dax’s jaw.

While he fought off the satyr, the car zigged and zagged, tossing Chiara against the door.

With a hand grabbing the wheel, Dax punched the attacker’s gut hard enough that the male lost his grip on the roof. He toppled backward, his legs the only thing keeping him in the car.

The satyr struggled to hoist himself into the Prius, but Dax had other plans.

“Hold the wheel,” he yelled at Chiara. Once she did, he captured a leg in each hand and flipped the attacker out, sending the Aeternal’s head bouncing onto the gravel road.

Both hands in business again, Dax grinned. “Thanks, little witch.”

She glanced out the back window. “He was really fast.”

“Or this shit-for-car is really slow.” In the rearview mirror, he saw the two companions scoop the satyr off the road.

“If you can’t appreciate the Prius, get out.”

“I like my ass. And it’s safer here.”

She chuckled.

“Do you always laugh so much?”

“Yes. Definitely when I’m nervous.”

“Seems strange to find humor in our circumstances.” Dax eyed the mirror again. “We lost them.”

When Chiara fluffed her skirt and tugged her peasant blouse into place, Dax’s attention zeroed in on her breasts.

She tilted her head. “Instead of ogling me, why not tell me what’s going on.”

“I don’t ogle, but your jugs are hard to miss.”

She dipped her chin to look at her chest and yanked on the white top so she exposed less skin. “Well?”

“The whole story will have to wait. In a fucking nutshell, we’re being chased by males who want to ice me. That’s bad news. But there’s worse. If they find out what you are, they’ll nab you.”

“What am I?” she asked.

“A witch.”

“So? Nobody has cared before.”

He glanced in the rearview mirror.Nothing. “I created a shit storm by leading them right to you. You may be a special kind of witch. The kind they’d love to get their hands on. Now my job is to protect you.”

“You protect me? Hah! That’s good. I saved you from those guys.”

Another glance told Dax no Aeternals were in sight, but he didn’t doubt they were still following. He turned onto a new gravel road, kicking up so much dust the three blind mice could track them. What he wouldn’t give for a nice concrete thoroughfare.

“When do we hit a paved highway?” he asked.
