Margo directed two of the males to drop theoversized couch onto a new area rug which was now lined up squarewith the wall. She had purchased the sofa, along with two others, awhile ago. “What do you think about this arrangement, guys?”
They all nodded when the movers shot thempleading glances.
“Okay. Place the others. There and there.”The feisty redheaded mate pointed. “The new big screen TV will goon the wall.”
Brak pushed off, lumbering toward Margo.“Big screen, you say? How big? Where’s it going?”
“It’s staggering.” Her eyes popped wide withenthusiasm. “Over 100 inches. With all the couches in this space,I’m thinking to put the TV there. What’s your take?”
“Perfect.” The big carnal demon was nowinterested in decorating. “We need a sturdy, huge-ass coffee table,one that’ll handle boots and shit.”
“It’s on the movers’ truck.” Margo chuckled.“The boots-and-shit-huge-ass coffee table.”
“Now you’re talkin’. What about an Xboxconsole?”
“A low cabinet is waiting outside for underthe TV. It’s big enough to hold all the Xbox stuff.”
“Hell yes.” Brak fisted the air. “I’ll hangout here all the time.”
“Wait till you see what we’re gonna do withthe kitchen. We’re tearing down walls, adding an eating area,expanding the pantry, bringing in a humongous refrigerator.”
“If you keep it full, I’ll definitely lodgemy ass on a couch.”
“Let’s go, demon.” Ram grabbed hisfreron’sarm, walking toward Kole’s office. “I’m starting tofeel like we’re in an episode of Queer Eye for the StraightGuy.”
Denim came in on a run, her arm newlybandaged. She threw a thumb’s up. “Great job, ladies. Lookinggood.”
Obviously, she was already in on theremodel. Ram held the door, bowing with a sweeping arm gesturewhile she walked through in front of him. “How’re you feeling?”
“Awake. Lucky the bullet only grazedme.”
Already sitting at the conference table wereChay, Galena, Tyr, Dax, Thorn, Sabine, Nico, and Skyler. At thehead, Kole thrummed his fingers on the tabletop.
As they entered, the commander belted out,“Tell me what the fuck’s going on. Sorry, Frisca.” He gave Skyleran apologetic grin.
Her brows arched, but she waved a dismissivehand.
Ram threw himself into a chair, flinging anarm over the back. “Brak here killed one of the humans who werewaiting at the portal. We dropped off his body with Alarik’s labtechs. Maybe they can tell us what’s powering them up. Two of themjumped from ground to rooftop. It’s Denim who’s got the big news,though.”
She took a deep breath. “My scumbagex-husband was one of them. But he’s much bigger. I can alsoguarantee he never jumped so high before.”
Kole took the news on the chin, barelyflinching, no fire. “Any idea what’s going on?”
“None, but I can reach out to a few of hisold buddies. If they’ll talk to me,” said Denim.
Rein passed a hand over his military-cuthair. “We need to warn Aeternals to cross into New Orleans atextreme risk. We’ve been too slap dash about the situation.”
“Yeah.” Kole tented his fingers, a moveeveryone appreciated. “But the Ministry of Prosperity is squealinglike a stuck wilding rhino-pig, proclaiming an economic crash if weprevent Aeternals from using portals. The Mardi-on partiers won’tbe happy either.”
“We’re going to listen to thosepencil-dicked number crunchers or a bunch of kids?” Ram scowled.“With their new superhuman shit and tranq bullets, those humans,whoever the fuck they are, will capture one of us soon. A liveAeternal specimen.”
Kole nodded. “Skyler has news. It solvespart of the puzzle. Frisca?”
“The Alliance had a traitor in its midst,one who hacked into documents detailing New Orleans portalsites.”
“Their agents picked him up, but didn’t getmuch out of him,” explained Kole. “He claims to work for a humannamed Mars. An alias. Described him as a military type. Buzz-cuthair, stiff jaw, cold eyes. Stick up his anal cavity. Averageheight. Bulked up.”
“Big payments went into the traitor’s bankaccounts, but we haven’t been able to trace where the money camefrom or where the guy sent the stolen documents. Our new tech andyour Logan are both working on it. If anyone can find theinformation, they can,” said Skyler.
