Nothing.
“What’s wrong with your hocus pocus?” Thesatyr jacked his speed up a notch.
“Abso-fucking-lutely nada. They’re too faraway for my spell to work.”
The Firebrands pursued the human targets wholeaped across a wide space and onto another rooftop, landingintact.
Galena took the lead as Chay jacked a boltinto the chamber of hischu-ko-nuwhile sprintingforward.
Ram hung back, pivoted, and checked below, drawn by a sudden urge to find Denim. He spotted her leaningagainst a wall.
What the hell?
Brak was bentover her.
Denim wrapped a hand around her upper arm.“It just grazed me. No worry,” she shouted to Ram as he leaped fromthe roof, softly landing beside her.
He pried her fingers loose, ripped hersleeve, and exposed the wound. She was lucky. If the bullet hadpenetrated, the sedative in it could have exploded into her system. No telling what it would do to a human, even one with a dash ofwitch DNA. Some of the same shit killed a pure-blood Aeternal. Athrough-and-through made a female demon sleepy. As it was, hisstomach busted a few flip flops.
“This is exactly why you should have keptyour pretty cheeks planted in the truck.” Pent-up anger bubbled tothe surface, changing his translucent irises to flashing neongreen.
Denim frowned. “Don’t be an ass. I’ve gottenworse injuries than this shaving my legs.” Her chin bobbed to herchest, her lids fluttering closed.
Brak shrugged. “I’ll get Rein. We’ll dumpthe body in the truck. Call in a cleaning crew.”
Chay, Galena, and Tyr strode around thecorner. Frowns all around.
“We lost them after they jumped to theground again,” said Tyr. “Too many places to hide.”
“The male with the baseball cap dodged mybolt. No human can escape my aim.” Chay whined, “Even Aeternalshave trouble.”
Galena scraped fingers through her silkystraight hair. “You want to tell them, Denim, or should I?”
“I will.” Denim slurred her words, but Ramgot the drift. “The guy in the baseball cap is my ex.”

After dropping off the deadguy, Ram stashed the truck in the garage. He strode into thestronghold’s gathering room to a buzz of activity. Brak and Reinleaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching.
“What’s up?” He followed the direction ofthe noise.
Rein pointed toward Margo. “As you can see,Chay’s mate is tossing orders at a bunch of delivery guys. They’vemoved the same couch four or five times. I’ve lost count.”
“Why?”
“The descendants say the stronghold needs ado-over. My Brae’s leading the pack.”
Brak snarled. “They better not fuck with thegame room. All’s I’m saying.”
The Firebrands set up a game room on theother side of the winding stairs which led to the second floorwhere all the descendants’ apartments were located.
Braelyn strolled by, a tray in her handfilled with soft drinks and goodies. “Nobody’s touching the sacredgame room slash man cave. All the boy toys are staying. We mightadd new furniture, though. Make it cozier.”
“Not too cozy.” Brak reached for anappetizer. Something wrapped in a crust.
Braelyn slapped his hand. “These are for themovers.”
Rein stifled a grin, shrugging, when Braklooked to him for support.
