“I take it,” said Alarik, “she has shown nosigns of being a witch. No change in eye color. What aboutgifts?”
“None,” answered Lizette.
Indigo jumped out of her seat and rushed tothe couple, hugging them both. “Don’t worry, dear. Mark my words. He’ll get in your pants yet. I know the future.”
A blush crawled up Lizette’s pale skin.
Rein pushed his chair away from the table, crossing an ankle over his opposite knee. “Auntie, that’s nottrue.”
“Spoiler alert. My boyo is throwing wet ragsonto the fire. Okay, I confess, I do not know the exact future, butit is logical to assume the two of you will be rutting like bunniessoon enough.”
Denim glanced at Ram, not knowing if sheshould comment on the extent of their relationship. It must beobvious.
Ram settled the matter. “Denim’s eyes kindaspeak for themselves.”
She grimaced. “Well put, satyr.”
The group around the table buttoned up,thinking. When eyes turned to Nico, he met their stares head on.“Hell no. Sabine and I are none of your damn business.” His grinwas a give-away, though.
Breaking in, Rein drew them back tobusiness. “Let’s say our fucking good times are catalysts. Don’tyou think it’s odd we’ve been brought together? Firebrand anddescendant.”
Indigo scooted forward in her seat. Raisinga finger, she pointed. “I saw you and you and you and you and youin the river. I didn’t see anyone doing the nasty. So, relax. Butyou are all playing a role in this miracle play.”
“What role?” asked Margo.
“Don’t know yet. The river’s a little murkyon that one.” She jumped up, continuing to twirl a strand of hairaround her finger. “Maybe we should send out all the singleFirebrands to see which humans they boink. We might find more Covendescendants.”
Braelyn chuckled. “I bet they’d be willingto soldier up. But I think we have a faster way, Indigo. Our bestbet is Miller Nash and hisCustodes Templiiconnections. Weneed their records. Besides, maybe the jumpstart is less about thesex and more about deep emotions binding a Firebrand and descendanttogether.”
Denim interrupted, “This whole fate thinggives me the heebie jeebies. Are we implying our feelings for eachother aren’t real? Some cosmic force is bringing us together? That’s disturbing.”
“I agree.” Braelyn tapped a finger on herchin. “It reeks of being a chess piece, moved around by some unseenhand. I don’t like it.” She glanced at her mate.
Rein’s jaw set like stone. Pushing out ofhis chair, his muscles tense, he grabbed Braelyn’s hand. With herjerking along behind him, he spoke over his shoulder. “We’re notsome damn pawns.” They strode out the door, his anger palpable inthe air.
Kole quirked his head toward the exit. Heand Skyler strolled out while he smiled down at her. “Don’t worry,Frisca. We chose each other.”
Alarik pinched his lips together inserious-scientist thinking mode. “It’s hard to think your choicesare controlled.”
Margo stroked Chay’s leg. “I don’t care. Ilove my ylve no matter who brought him to me.”
“Damn straight, Red. Fate the matchmaker.Could be a Broadway musical. I’d go to it. This has been fun, butit’s my day off. So, my little pawn and I have some unfinishedbusiness.”
Led out by her Firebrand, his hand on herlower back, Margo chuckled.
Jarek, with a hand to her elbow, gentled hiscompanion to her feet. “I am a great believer in destiny showing usthe best road. If fate has something in store for Lizette and me,it’s a path I will gladly travel.”
Lizette squeezed his hand as they left themeeting.
Nico snarled, his eyes narrow squints. “Fatedoes not have me by my balls. If something is happening betweenSabine and me, it’s because we want it to happen. Get me?”
“I get you, warlock.” Sabine rested one handon the ex-agent’s forearm.
“Screw fate. We do what we want, sweetness.”
“Damn straight, cuddles.”
Once Denim, Ram, Alarik, and Indigo werealone in the conference room, an uncomfortable silence wrappedaround them.
