“It’s nice out here,” she says, staring out at the water.“Peaceful.”
“I love it here.I wish we could come more often.”
“Why can’t you?”
“Work.Safety protocols.So many issues.And summer here is fairly short.By the time we figure out a schedule, summer’s over.”
“Your life here is…hard,” she says softly.There’s no censure in her voice, like she’s merely stating a fact.“You have more money than most of us can even dream of, but every day is…a struggle.”
I hesitate.“It can be.I’ll be honest and tell you how much I hate being a politician, but Erik needed me to step up, so I did.Hopefully, this will be my last term.Come January, I plan to step down.”
“And then?”
“Then I want to focus more on being a dad.”I pause, waiting until she looks at me.“And maybe being a boyfriend.”
“A boyfriend?”She cocks her head.“Did you have someone in mind whose boyfriend you want to be?”
I lean over and press my lips to hers.“Let’s not play games, Courtney.I want you.I’ve always wanted you.And I think you’d want me too if you could push aside your fears.”
“I do want you,” she breathes against my lips, surprising me.

“I’m so hard for you, Courtney,” I groan, digging my fingers into her hair and pressing my forehead to hers.
“It will have to be in your room—we don’t want to wake the baby.”
“Absolutely.”I get to my feet and hold out my hands.
