“That’s the thing. Apparently nothing or very little. She and I quote ‘had it in storage.’”

“You don’t believe that?”

“Do you?” Finn turned towards the door. “Gods, I need another drink.”

Leo’s arms wrapped around his waist and stopped his headlong flight down the stairs. “I think we’ve both had enough,” he rumbled into Finn’s ear. “Don’t you?”

Shame rushed through Finn. “I never thought I’d end up like my father.”

“If you mean an angry drunk, then you’re a long way away from that,” Leo soothed, rocking them both from foot to foot in a gesture that was adorable because it was so unconscious. “These last weeks are catching up with us. I’m sure we’re allowed an evening to fall apart.”

Finn didn’t know how much Leo had drunk before coming home, but there was a faint slur to his words. And maybe the rocking wasn’t all about comfort but somewhat about balance.

“What ruined your buzz?”

Leo stiffened against him. “Family trouble. Don’t worry, it will all go away very soon.”

They scrambled back downstairs but didn’t bother with washing up or tidying the living room. They merely checked the locks and turned out the lights before they crawled into their sleeping bag and curled around each other.

The previous night had ended with pleasure, and this morning had started the same way. Finn thought that this night, as they held each other in the dark, confused and uncertain, all each sought from the other was comfort.
