“Maybe not, but it would be polite to explain it, rather than spring it on them, don’t you think?”

“I don’t want to get ye in trouble.” Roisin hesitated.

“What if we ask the Tienfields to dinner and you explain it to them?”

Her eyes filled with tears, and she dashed them away, a little angry. Whether at her weakness or her indecision, Finn couldn’t have said. He reached for Leo’s hand and twined their fingers, waiting for Roisin to make up her mind.

They followed her into the living room, found her staring at nothing in particular. There wasn’t a scrap of sound, but suddenly the air shimmered and wavered in a way that Finn had never seen. “It’s still working,” she announced, eyes wet. “I’ll stay until the solstice. If ye want to tell the Tienfields, do it before Tuesday evening.”

Finn wanted to hug her, but she didn’t look as if she’d welcome any kind of touch right then.

Leo seemed to think so too, because he poured another glass of whisky and held it out to her. “You’re welcome to stay—tonight and always. You know that, right?”

She turned that dazzling smile on them. “I know it. Go get some sleep. I… I need to think.”
