“Then I won’t bother sayin’ it.” Roisin half turned and leaned one arm on the counter.

The vaguely familiar feeling Leo had had on first seeing her, suddenly hit him with force. “You also bought ice cream from me. You were the one who suggested I offer it to local cafés and restaurants. And now you’re standing in our kitchen at—what?—ten to midnight on a Saturday night.” He raised a hand as she opened her mouth. “Don’t evenbreathethe word coincidence!”

Roisin’s shoulders sagged. “Nothing I can say will make this sound any more reasonable,” she said. “I reallyamlooking for a Saxon treasure trove.”

“You don’t seem to have any equipment for a treasure hunt. What would you have done had you found it? You don’t even have a bag or a backpack to put your loot in.”

“I don’t want the treasure,” she snapped. “Ye’re welcome to the whole hoard when I find it. All I want is a single silver coin from it.Mysilver coin.”

Leo was ready to call bullshit when he felt Finn’s hand in the small of his back.

“Let’s dial it back a notch,” Finn said. “Why don’t you sit down? I’ll make coffee and then we’ll discuss this like sensible adults.” Roisin frowned, but Finn held up a hand before she could say a word. “Unless you want to explain what the fuck is going on with you and that cutlery drawer?”

“What do ye mean?”

“It’s not the first time you’ve checked it. You had a go at that thing the first night we were here,” Leo pointed out.

“How do ye know?”

“Because you didn’t put it back the way you found it and we’re not stupid!”

She stared at them, her eyes wide.

“Unless you want us to call the police and turn you in for serial housebreaking, you’d better talk to us.”

“Will ye at least believe that I mean ye no harm?”

His answer seemed important to her, and Leo decided to give a little. “I’ve seen nothing to the contrary,” he said. “I believe you. For now.”
