“Totally meant it.”
“And when you said my ‘stomach is the real Stairway to Heaven’ then proceeded to blow me while performing air guitar on my abs?”
“What can I say, you made me feel musical.”
We have a good laugh at that.
She looks deep into my eyes. “Please know, I snuck out the next morning because I was embarrassed and ashamed, not because I didn’t want to see you again. I’ve basically thought of nothing and no one else since. And none of what I just said is me making excuses for my behavior that day, but?—”
“Colleen?
“Yeah?” Her eyes are wide and hopeful.
“I fucking loved your behavior that day. Your behavior that day was superb.”
“Back atcha, stud!”
She laughs and lays her head on my shoulder. It’s the first time she’s touched me since I found her waiting on my front stoop. Touching her again, however simple the touch may be, feels like coming home.
“You know,” I whisper. “I never did get to take you on a real New York City date.”
“You’re right, you didn’t,” she sasses.
“In my defense, Cookie told me you didn’t want to date; you only wanted to fuck.”
“I think we’ve already agreed that while Cookie was fun, she suffered from having a one-track mind. However, Colleen is interested in all aspects of the human experience. Colleen would be honored to go on a real New York City date with you.”
“How does right now sound?” I ask.
“You want to take Colleen on a date right now?” She laughs.
“I mean, if she’s not busy?” I tease.
She sighs, and the air in the room gets serious again.
“Am I missing something?” I ask tentatively.
Colleen places a hand on my forearm. “Bacon, I would love nothing more than for you to take me on a date right now.”
“But…?”
“But there’s one more thing you need to know first.”
I brace myself for the worst.
But instead, she says…
“I’m pregnant. With your baby.”
Chapter 13
Colleen
“That’s the best news I’ve ever heard in my goddamn life.”
What did he just say?
He must have heard me wrong. Or I heard him wrong. Either way, right now something is very wrong.
