“Why?” she asked, her face full of the same curiosity that he had seen so many times since they met. He was glad that her spirits were better than the previous day.

“I dinnae ken, really. It isnae verra common is all.” He shrugged. Why did it matter that they didn’t eat them too often?

“Sometimes it’s odd, the things you eat here and the things you don’t.”

“What do ye mean?” he asked, perplexed.

“You eat haggis with dinner every other day, but no one actually eats hazelnuts. I wonder if I can find any sources on when the people in Scotland started eating them if I look hard enough…”

Her voice trailed off and her eyes glazed over as her thoughts wandered to the topic she was talking about. It was something he had noticed about her whenever she talked about how something was different in time and the things she knew about his. It was amusing, even if he wasn’t always able to follow her thoughts.

“Well, we do eat them, Princess. We just dinnae serve them up with our supper every evening.”

She was startled out of her thoughts.

“You’re right. That would probably make it even harder to find information.”

He chuckled. That was not exactly why he had told her that, but if it helped her, he supposed that was all that mattered.

The ride continued and even though they did not speak the entire time it was much more comfortable than the previous day had been. It made the day pass much more quickly and him much more aware of their time together getting shorter.

When they stopped for the night, this time making their bed near a shielded pool of water, she did not even hesitate to take her spot next to him, or curl up with her head on his chest.

His hands ran through her hair as she gently explored his torso with her fingers. In the bright moonlight he could see that she was lost in thought.

“What are ye thinking about, Princess?” he asked, his voice a half whisper as he was loathe to ruin the calm of the night. The only thing that he could hear beyond their shared breaths was the burbling of the water as it ran through the small pool.

“Nothing. Everything.” She shook her head. “It is so peaceful here.”

“Aye, it is. Much different from the Castle, eh?”

“And my own time. There is always so much noise, no matter if you are in the city or the country. The country is quieter, of course, but nothing like this.”

Not for the first time, he wished that he could see what she was talking about even though he knew it was impossible.

“It sounds verra different.”

“It is.”

It was silent for the next few minutes as they each lost themselves in their own thoughts, but gradually, Gordain became conscious of a change in the space between them. One of Diana’s hands had snuck into the collar of his shirt, her casual caresses turning more exploratory.

He was instantly on fire. She looked up at him, her bottom lip caught between her teeth and he no longer wanted to think. His hand went from her hair to her neck as he pulled her up to him and kissed her with a desperation that took him by surprise.

She was not far behind him. Her grip on his shoulder was just shy of painful as she allowed him entrance to her mouth, her tongue instantly meeting his in a fierce duel. He rolled over, planting his elbows near her shoulders as they continued to kiss with abandon.

The noises she made were exquisite. His hand moved to her chest, flicking her nipple gently, eliciting the most delightful moan against his lips as her entire body arched up against him, brushing up against him from hip to shoulder. He pinned her down gently, his hardened member rubbing against her center causing a mewl to escape her.

“Gordain,” she moaned out to the night’s sky as their lips parted and his mouth made the now familiar trek down her neck.

He smiled even as he gave his full attention to her collarbones, and then lower to her breasts where he teased her with small sucking bites through her shift. Her moans got louder, her hands clutching his head.

Usually, he would not allow things to progress between them too far, always conscious of their dwindling time and the fact that she would be leaving soon, but something about the urgency that had sprung between them unexpectedly that night made him bold.

His hands caressed down her body, his fingers tracing over each of her curves until he found the hem of her shift and started pulling it up. Her breath stuttered in her chest, but she made no move to stop him even as he revealed the soft hairs at the apex of her thighs, her soft stomach, her breasts—

He bowed his head, treating each body part he revealed with reverent kisses. When he could not raise the shift any further, Diana sat up and raised her hands over her head, permitting him to remove it completely. He did not wait a second longer than he had to. Her shift was discarded to the side and he sat back staring at her in awe.

She was beautiful. He was not unfamiliar with her body, having spent the last two weeks memorizing her every curve during their nightly explorations, but this was the first time he was seeing her that way.
