“What are they doing?” Jess asked.

“I don’t know. They could be meeting someone to deliver information. I would guess someone in a boat rowing to shore.”

Jess grabbed his arm. “What about the letters you took? Won’t they have missed them if they are meeting with someone to give them the letters?”

His mouth pressed into a grim line. “I’m sure they will have noticed. However, they would likely still need to show up for the meeting. Presumably, they will report the missing letters and will be charged with finding out what happened.”

“Should we replace them? I could go back inside.”

He shook his head. “That’s pointless now. They likely know they are missing. But they won’t necessarily suspect us—they had a house full of people tonight.”

“That’s rather helpful,” she murmured, watching the Chesmores together on their blanket. Wait, were they kissing?

“Is that how they pass the time waiting for the courier to arrive?” Dougal laughed softly. “It’s hard not to like them. I was truly beginning to hope they weren’t spies.”

“Has this ever happened to you before? Liking people you were supposed to investigate?” Because Jess definitely liked him and couldn’t imagine how he could be working against the Crown. The thought made her ill.

“Not quite like this,” he said. “Good Chr—” He cut himself off.

Jess stared in disbelief as the Chesmores’ embrace grew more…intimate. They lay back, their bodies entwined. Then Mary lifted her skirt as Gil put his hand between her legs.

In response, Jess’s sex began to pulse. Heat and desire spread through her body, making her breasts ache and her limbs quiver. Mary’s cries floated to them on the breeze as Gil appeared to unbutton his fall.

She ought to look away. And she absolutely shouldn’t be aroused. She couldn’t do the former, and she simply couldn’t help the latter. Gil and Mary moved as one, their bodies rolling together like the waves rising and falling nearby—a melodic, natural movement as primal as the sea licking relentlessly at the shore.

Dougal’s fingertips brushed against hers. Had he done that on purpose? She looked toward him, but he was watching the Chesmores, so perhaps not. Was he as affected as she was?

Mary let out a keening cry. It sounded as though she were in great pain. Then Gil shouted several times.

Jess was utterly confused. The scene had been so beautiful, so enchanting. “What just happened?”

Dougal looked at her, his lips parted. “They, ah, finished.”

“Oh.” Jess understood what that meant. She’d found her own release on many occasions, but it had never sounded likethat. “Well, I think perhaps I am missing something, then. Would you mind explaining it to me?”

Chapter14

What had she just asked him?

Dougal stared at her while also glancing from the side of his eye to keep watching the Chesmores. “I’m sorry, what don’t you understand?”

As soon as the question left his mouth, he regretted saying it. He’d just invited her to ask him about everything they’d just witnessed. Not only would he probably be very bad at describing it—he’d much rather demonstrate—he shouldn’t be the one to tell her such things. It ought to be her lover or her…mother. Although, given what he knew of her mother, he expected the latter wouldn’t happen.

“I, ah, never mind.” She looked back toward the Chesmores. “Forget I asked.”

He watched her jaw clench and unclench and noted that her hands were flexing and unflexing. He could practically feel the energy coming from her body. She seemed quite…agitated.

Perhaps she was aroused. He certainly was. Hell, he’d been fighting his desire for her for days, and now they were standing in the moonlight watching two people have breathtakingly glorious sex.

“We shouldn’t have watched,” she whispered.

He redirected his attention to the Chesmores, who were now lying on the blanket and appeared to be looking at the stars. “We had to—we’re on a mission. Do not admonish yourself for that.”

“It seems so intrusive. I wouldn’t want people watching me do…that.”

“I can’t say I disagree,” Dougal said, suddenly overcome with visions of her doing…that. With him. He nearly groaned with a mix of lust and frustration. How he needed this mission to conclude before he did something extremely foolish. “Still, it was necessary. We must see what they are doing here. It’s the entire reason we were dispatched to Dorset.”

“I suppose that means we can’t leave?”
