The sun caught her sideway view lighting up her cheekbones, those little curls by her edges, that gold chain on her neck. Her belly poked out under the jacket she wore over her crop top. I just watched her soak everything up before she said anything. After some time, she finally turned to me.
“This…” she said above a whisper. “Dom…” The tears were already falling and those were tears of relief and she couldn’t hide them. I knew deep down inside she was concerned that all this shit was just because of her pregnancy but this was how I really felt. I didn’t have time to pacify no bitch about my feelings nor play with one, but Carmen was deeper than that. Years ago, she would’ve swallowed those tears before they could drop but this time, she didn’t swallow them back like she used to. Carmen had enough money to afford whatever she wanted but even if she wanted to move out of her penthouse, she wouldn’t have just because it wasn’t on my call, that’s how loyal she was.
She came right up to me, pressing her forehead against my hard chest, with her arms wrapping around me tight. I slid my hands down to her lower back pulling her in close and steady before placing one hand on her stomach. Her shoulders shook a little as she cried and not like she was falling apart. It was just letting go of everything she’d been carrying.
“I never had somewhere that was just… mine,” she said with her face still in my chest. Her voice was small and strong at the same time, like she was speaking from somewhere old and tender inside herself. Like it was deeper than this. “Not growing up, not in college, not even my condo. I always had to be ready to move, to protect myself, just in case I had to rebuild.” She leaned back so she could look up at me. Her eyes were red and wet and that shit broke my heart although it was happy tears. I didn’t like to see her cry.
“But this,” she said using her hand to cup it on my jaw with her voice trembling, “this feels like I can finally breathe.”
I brushed my thumb across her cheek one time and told her straight up, “You deserve that, and more.”
She let out this shaky breath, like a weight had finally been lifted from her chest and gave me this slow nod but it said everything that words couldn’t. Then she snatched up my hand and pulled me with her, leading us through the living room over them shiny-ass floors till we were right up on that glass wall, staring at the ocean like it was all ours. The water was moving all chill and smooth with that sound I liked. She squeezed my hand tighter like she was making sure this was real for real.
“This is our home,” she whispered.
I nodded my head. “Yeah wifey, this our home,” I repeated.
She laughed and finally wiped her eyes getting back to Carmen because she didn’t like being emotional but maybe the pregnancy had her hormones allowing her to feel shit, she was trying to suppress at one point too. Then she turned to me andplaced my hand on her belly again letting me feel the tiny kick since she was five months now. It wasn’t hard kicks but just enough to feel the flutters and that did something to me that I couldn’t explain, something I didn’t have words for, and she saw it because she noticed everything about me.
“Thank you,” she said, and I knew that came from a deeper place, that was a woman thanking her man because she knew what it took to be him.
I leaned in and kissed her nice and slow like she liked it feeling my dick jump. Ever since the doctor told us it was cool to have sex, I’d been tearing that pussy up. When we pulled back, she looked around again with her eyes still wet.
“So, where’s the master suite?” she asked, “I can’t wait to see it.”
I smirked and nodded toward the curved staircase. “You’ll see. Ain’t no furniture up there either so you gotta make it happen. Use the black card and make it a home for our family. I did have one request though.”
“What was that?” She asked with her eyebrow slightly raised.
“Upon entry, I need a big ass gold ‘R’ on the gates.”
She smiled and checked the time on her watch. “I like that, King.”
“I’m glad we on the same page wifey,” I winked at her ready to eat that pussy out the frame. “How much time you got?” I asked with my head slightly cocked.
One look at me and she knew why I was asking. She checked her apple watch for the time. “Can you get it done in twenty minutes?” She teased.
I looked around and used one hand to unbuckle the buckle on my Fendi belt. “Shit, all I need is ten.” I told her, looking around at the shadows. “Hey, ya’ll step out for a minute. We good in here. Cover the mansion.”
They nodded their heads and walked outside giving me and my wifey some privacy. She didn’t move yet. She stayed right there with me in the quietness until they were gone and when it was clear, I playfully lifted her in my arms like a baby and walked her to the kitchen before placing her on the island where she laughed. She looked me dead in the eyes as she removed her gun from the small of her back. I removed mine too sitting our his and hers on the counter.
“You’re down to nine minutes now.” She teased.
“Say less, I’ma have you cummin in five.” I did just that too, tore her ass up having her begging for more.
It seemed like every time me and Dom were around each other we were trying to create another baby as if we weren’t already baking one, which was the main reason for my tiredness today but on the outside, nobody would’ve known that I was truly exhausted. The cameras were swarming the courthouse before I even stepped out of the SUV this morning with news anchors, gossip bloggers, law students with their notebooks ready, and everybody waiting to see ifCarmen Royalwas as lethal in court as the rumors promised she was. Security cleared a path, and I walked straight through, with my YSL heels stabbing the floors, my chin up, and my hand resting lightly over my stomach and briefcase in the other hand. I didn’t rush and I didn’t look at a single camera. Because for what? They needed to see control. They needed to believe I owned the room before I even entered it and that’s how I liked it.
Kilo was already seated at the defense table with his locs pulled back neatly wearing a cream button-down, no jewelry, and a nice and calm posture because as I explained to him, presentation mattered. Did I think he did what he told me he didn’t do? Absolutely, because he was big in the streets and his gang ties were strong. I set my files down and took the seat beside him without looking at him as he leaned toward me whispering.
“You ready?” he asked.
I didn’t look up. “I stay ready.”
The courtroom was full of tension, and I could tell the jury was locked in paying attention. Judge Alvarez looked down at us over his thick glasses; he’d seen me here before plenty of times and he knew I didn’t come to lose. The State started with their performance showing photos, timelines, bullshit charts. Their lead prosecutor tried to be intimidating. “The defendant was seen fleeing…”
I stood up before he could even get started. “Objection, counsel is testifying. The State has not established ownership of the recovered firearm, nor confirmed chain of custody. The lab responsible for the ballistics is currently under audit for case tampering.”
It got extremely quiet at first but then the prosecutor’s jaws tightened like he wanted to call me a bitch. I chuckled. Judge Alvarez nodded one time and spoke. “Sustained.”
